We all are aware of the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), a standardized English language proficiency test for non-native speakers. Educational institutions and employers accept it globally to assess the English language skills of students and employees.

After the exam, IELTS test takers receive a Test Report Form (TRF). So, what is TRF in IELTS? Let’s find out.

What is Test Report Form (TRF) in IELTS

Let’s now answer the question: what is the test report form in IELTS? The IELTS 2024 Test Report Form (TRF) is an official document representing your IELTS results. This can either be a physical copy or a digital version (eTRF), and is valid for two years.

A TRF carries the IELTS bands scored in the reading, writing, speaking, and listening sections of the test. It is like a mark sheet that is shared with educational institutions and employers in English-speaking countries to check the English skills of candidates.

You can collect the TRF from IDP IELTS offices after producing the identity proof they used for registration. You will typically get one TRF, but if you're applying to specific immigration authorities, like Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) or the United Kingdom Border Agency (UKBA), you can avail of two copies.

To procure these two copies, you must provide proof of application to CIC and UKBA. Institutions listed on your IELTS application form receive up to five copies directly.

One can also verify their TRF by using the IELTS online verification service. You will require a Test Report Form (TRF) Number. Now, what is the IELTS TRF number and how to find it?  It is a 15–18-digit number mentioned in the bottom right-hand corner of the TRF page.

So, if you aim to embark on your study abroad journey, the IELTS TRF is an indispensable document for you.

It is indispensable to keep TRF secure as it is a crucial document. The institution can view the IELTS test report form of the candidates by accessing the ‘IELTS Test Report Form Verification’ service. For this, they will need the candidates’ IELTS test report form number.

Moreover, students should be aware that IELTS reference numbers and test report form numbers are not similar.

IELTS Test Report Form (TRF) Verification

As part of the assessment processes, all IELTS reports are verified with the aid of the online IELTS Test Report Form (TRF) Verification site. Access to this site has enabled organizations/ institutes to ensure they receive bona fide IELTS results.

Moreover, only IELTS Recognising Organizations (those that are listed on the official IELTS website) are eligible to access the IELTS TRF verification service.

Additional Test Report Form or ATRF

The first five electronic Additional Test Report Forms (ATRF) are processed free of charge and can be requested within a month from the test date. Candidates will be charged an administration fee of INR 250 for any additional TRF reporting per college/university after disbursement of the first five reports.

The TRFs can be sent to educational institutions mentioned in the application via email, regular postage, courier services, or overseas postage. You might have to bear additional charges for courier services and overseas postage.

IDP has stopped accepting in-person applications for additional TRF. Candidates can submit their additional TRF requests directly on the official IDP website. They can request to send the additional TRF to any recognized organization within two years of appearing for the IELTS test. The requested TRFs are directly sent to the organization.

Additional TRF applications cannot be canceled after applying, and IDP takes around 5-10 working days to process an additional TRF request. The duration doesn’t include weekends, holidays, and the day the application was submitted.

How to Send Your TRF to Institutions

Test takers can apply for five TRF postings to colleges/universities within one month of the test date. Submission of the TRFs to recognized organizations is managed by the organizers of the IELTS examination. They are shared with educational institutions mentioned in the application via email, regular postage, courier, or overseas postage.

However, international educational institutions or employers subscribed to IELTS do not require original copies of TRFs. They can access TRF online.

As discussed at the beginning of the article, you too can access the TRF online via your registered account, but you need to know the TRF number for it.

How Can One Track IELTS TRF

Candidates who have appeared for the paper-based IELTS exam receive the TRF with their IELTS score on the 13th day after the exam. On the other hand, candidates for the computer-based test get their IELTS score three to five days after the exam.

They can track their IELTS TRF online, through SMS, post, or by visiting a center after the results are declared. They need to produce the identity proof used during registration to get the scores from the test center.

Conclusion

Understanding the significance and function of the TRF in IELTS is essential for candidates, as it not only validates their English language proficiency but also plays a pivotal role in their journey towards higher education, professional opportunities, or immigration.

The TRF's comprehensive presentation of scores ensures a clear and accurate reflection of how the candidate has performed, making it a key component in the assessment and selection processes where English proficiency is a criterion.

For IELTS test-takers in 2024, the TRF is not just a score report but a passport to a multitude of opportunities across the globe.

To conclude, the TRF or the copy of your IELTS results is posted to colleges/universities mentioned on your IELTS application form. While regular postage is free, you may have to pay additional charges for courier services or overseas postage.

You can ask for additional TRFs apart from the first five reports. You may have to pay an additional administration fee for additional TRFs. However, international educational institutions or employers subscribed to IELTS do not require original copies of TRFs. They can access your TRF online.
