The Master of Science in Sustainable Building Systems integrates elements of an architectural engineering program with construction management while embracing the concepts of engineering sustainability as related to energy and materials usage and the effect on the environment. The program focuses on the design and operation of buildings to provide a comfortable, healthy, and productive environment and landscape with minimal energy and environmental impact. Prospective students for the MSSBS program are engineering, architecture, business or science majors, and industry professionals pursuing an industrial or public planning-based career, who desire to gain cutting-edge knowledge in sustainability practices for building systems development and its infrastructure.

Students develop leadership and decision-making skills to implement sustainable building practices in either the private or public sectors in the global market. The graduates of the Master of Science in Sustainable Building Systems should display a high level of engineering knowledge in a broad range of architectural engineering, civil engineering, and construction management while embracing the concepts of engineering sustainability as related to energy and materials usage and the effects on the environment. Graduates will have the base training necessary to lead efforts within companies to plan and implement sustainable practices for the design and operation of buildings, realize energy and materials efficiency improvements, and minimize environmental impact. Upon graduation, students will be prepared to take the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Green Associate examination, providing them with an internationally recognized certificate in this field.

More than ever, architecture needs to be understood as part of an ever-expanding set of aesthetic, social, and technical systems. The Master of Science in Architecture (MSArch) is a one-year/three-semester STEM-designated program that invites architects and non-architects to explore this expanded zone of interdisciplinary practice. Each student chooses an area of concentration that allows them to build expertise in a specific system of thought and technique.

A learn-by-doing approach to professional education is the crux of the program, at the only accredited school of architecture and planning in the SUNY system. From the studio to the community, students and faculty constantly "do" and "make" through applied research, built works and creative activities. Built on five graduate research groups: inclusive design, ecological practices, material culture, situated technologies and urban design, the graduate programs take advantage of the cutting-edge research being conducted at UB's School of Architecture and Planning.

As an Architecture school within a research university, we are a platform for innovation. Our emphasis on research faculty offers students the opportunity to collaborate in growing areas from nanotechnology to augmented and virtual reality, and to explore the frontiers of robotics and digital fabrication. Our program objectives are grounded in professional accreditation requirements.

The Interior Architecture program offers a post-professional degree for students with a background in interior design or architecture. The curriculum reinforces design fundamentals; advances technical skills and conceptual approaches; allows for specialization in areas such as, but not limited to health/wellness, making/fabrication, or technology/representation; and culminates in a comprehensive thesis research and design project. Composed of 45.0 graduate credits, the program can be completed in four to six quarters. Students select from a range of studio, seminar, and elective courses to create a program tailored to their professional interest.

The program is closely affiliated with the graduate Design Research and Urban Strategy programs within the Department of Architecture, Design and Urbanism, and provides access to graduate programs across the University. These connections allow students to engage and collaborate with experts from a variety of disciplines, preparing them to take leadership roles in the profession.

This unique program offers students with a professional degree in architecture the opportunity to specialize their skills and apply architectural design thinking and capabilities to real-world challenges outside the field. The program is eligible for the STEM OPT Extension for F-1 visa holders.*

The program is located at UCLA Architecture and Urban Design’s IDEAS Campus, a state-of-the-art incubator for collaborative, cross-disciplinary design research. Led by professors who are experts in their respective fields, students join a team of educators and industry partners to question, challenge, and expand the current conventions of architectural practice.

For creative professionals with an interior design undergraduate degree, the Master of Arts in Interior Architecture (post-professional) program focuses on developing ability, knowledge, and applicability to: Global design issues, human behavior, occupant comfort, and contribution to the built environment.

This program combines an integration of theory and practice through required coursework in interior design firm management and graduate student forums. It allows for the application of design research, theory, and technology to professional practice used to strengthen your skills in critical thinking, design mastery, evidence-based research, and visual and oral communication. 

The M.Arch program at New York Tech helps you develop a critical understanding of historic and contemporary practices, cultures, and movements in the industry, preparing you to become a visionary leader and problem solver.

The program has two options:

a two-year professional degree track for those with a pre-professional degree in architecture

a three-year professional degree track for those with a bachelor’s degree in another area

Both options offer opportunities for travel abroad studios, workshops, and summer and semester programs at New York Tech’s international university partners in Europe, Asia, and Latin America. 

Throughout your program, you’ll engage in experimental, innovative challenges in areas including digital design and fabrication, advanced architectural technology, and environmental urbanism.

The Master of Science in Architectural Studies program is a one-year course of study with a research focused curriculum developed by the student, in close consultation with the faculty advisor.  The program is designed to allow students to develop further expertise in research of the built environment. 

Students should have a clear and well-articulated area of research focus upon entry to the program.  Prospective applicants are encouraged to contact potential faculty advisors prior to application.

While most students admitted to the program will hold a professional degree prior to admission, a professional degree is not required for admission.  Applicants holding degrees from related fields are encouraged to apply. Students considering advanced work at the PhD level are encouraged to apply.

Candidates admitted with full status may complete the program in one year of full-time academic study.

Admission

The admission grade point average for full standing in the Graduate College and the school must be at least 3.0 (A = 4.0). For applicants who meet the other requirements but have an admission GPA under 3.0, admission with limited standing may be permitted if evidence of exceptional qualification is presented.

Applicants are selected for admission on the basis of undergraduate academic performance and profession-related experience. Application material is evaluated by faculty members. The faculty's recommendations are based upon an appraisal of the admission grade point average determined from official transcripts, a portfolio or brochure of applicant's past work in architecture, a statement of objectives, three letters of recommendation, and relevant professional work experience.

Completed applications for the Masters or Doctoral programs must reach the Graduate Programs Office by January 15; students are admitted in the fall semester only. Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores are required for  Master of Science applicants.

The dual Master of Architecture I and the Master of Real Estate Development and Urbanism is a 126 credit program.  The dual Master of Architecture I AP and Master of Real Estate Development and Urbanism program is a 81 credit program.

The Master of Architecture I is a NAAB-accredited, 3 year (7 semesters) program intended for students holding undergraduate degrees in non-design fields. This STEM-designated professional degree program provides a well-grounded understanding of architecture as students immerse in contemporary challenges to address a variety of social, cultural, technological and programmatic contexts.

At the heart of the M.Arch I curriculum are Core Studios that introduce students to critical topics, imbue necessary skills, inspire critical thinking, examine the production of meaning in architecture, and foster an understanding of architecture as an integrative discipline. The Core Studios are carefully synchronized with core courses in drawing and visualization, history and theory, technology and systems, and practice.

The first year begins with an examination of the relationship between nature, landscape, and the built environment, and how architectural form is informed by a careful reading of place. A summer in the School’s Rome studio is configured to provide an intensive, on-site experience balancing design, history, theory, and analysis through drawing. In order to make travel to Rome more accessible, the School covers the cost of travel and lodging for this trip.

During the second year, students engage design-based critical inquiry into more complex issues including technology, structural systems, environmental stewardship, building envelope systems, and social human-centered aspects of architecture. In the Integrative Studio, which systematically incorporates professionals into the studio environment, students emulate modes of practice by organizing a complex architectural project combining design considerations with complex building systems, while also demonstrating proficiency in technical documentation.

The M.S. in Interior Architecture is a 49 or 69-credit graduate program structured to meet the needs of students from both non-design, design and architecture backgrounds seeking one of the best professional-level education in interior design/interior architecture. The program offers up to one year of advanced standing for those already in the field who are interested in refining their knowledge and skills at the graduate level. This program prepares students to reach their full potential, whether seeking an introduction or building on previous experience.

As an Interior Architecture program, we emphasize how the interior environment encompasses all parts of the interior volume and acknowledges the intersection between architecture and interiors. The curriculum integrates theory with the technical skills needed for practical application and immerses students in current technologies and sustainable practice as they work collaboratively and think critically to discover innovative solutions. Jefferson’s campus is positioned minutes from downtown, offering networking and employment opportunities within the city’s thriving architecture industry. Our faculty of practicing professionals provides many advantages and a range of real-world experiences. Graduates are well-prepared to sit for the NCIDQ exam and to join professional organizations such as ASID and IIDA, and to work for firms in all areas of the profession, including residential, commercial, corporate, healthcare, hospitality and education.

Upon completing the MS degree in the field of Architecture, students will be able to:

1. Integrate architecture and advanced research to address the most pressing and complex issues of design, environment, and culture.  
2. Develop research techniques and knowledge of advanced systems, techniques, and processes.
3. Innovate the knowledge and practice of architecture through advanced critical thinking and experimentation. 

The 1-year track is a +1 accelerated undergraduate-graduate program that enables eligible students to complete the 60-credit M.Arch. degree within 15 months after receiving Temple's Bachelor of Science in Architecture (B.S.Arch.) pre-professional degree. Eligible undergraduate students use up to 12 specified graduate credits to fulfill requirements for their undergraduate degree. Upon graduation from their undergraduate program, students move seamlessly into their graduate program. At the end of the contiguous fifth year, students receive a Master of Architecture degree. To be eligible for the program, students must be declared as an Architecture major; have a minimum of 3.25 cumulative GPA in at least 45 credits of coursework taken at Temple; be able to complete their undergraduate degree in four full-time terms (beginning with their first term taking a graduate course as an undergraduate); and be able to complete the graduate degree in one additional year, including the two summer terms of graduate coursework.
