Successfully passing the PLAB exam allows these graduates to obtain registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) and subsequently gain a license to practice medicine in the UK.

List of Countries Accepting PLAB Exam 

Here is a list of the countries where PLAB is accepted.

1. Australia

The Medical Board of Australia issues licenses to practice in the country to candidates who have passed the PLAB exam. However, additional conditions may apply, such as completing an internship before graduation or passing the Australian Medical Council (AMC) examination.

2. New Zealand

If you pass the PLAB examination, you can practice medicine directly in this country. However, you must be under clinical supervision for the first year.

3. Canada

A doctor must have completed the General Practitioner training and have around 3-4 years of experience to practice in Canada. This is an additional requirement apart from the PLAB exam. 

4. Dubai

Physicians practicing in the UK for more than a year or two can enter Dubai for practice after passing the PLAB exam. 

5. Ireland

The Medical Council of Ireland oversees the registration process and sets the criteria for foreign-trained doctors.

6. Scotland

Doctors must complete a foundation program after passing the PLAB exam to practice medicine in Scotland. This program often lasts for around two years.

7. Qatar

Candidates may have to appear for additional assessments or licensing programs even after passing the PLAB exam to practice in Qatar. 

8. United Kingdom

Doctors must complete a two-year foundation program after the PLAB exam to practice in this country. This procedure is often followed by another specialty training. 

9. Saudi Arabia

The doctors who have been in the United Kingdom for about 1 or 2 years can practice in this country once they pass their PLAB examination.

Validity of PLAB Scores

The validity of PLAB scores depends on when the exam was taken. According to the GMC, the validity of PLAB scores is as follows:-

• PLAB 1: Valid for three years
• PLAB 2: Valid for two years

If a candidate has passed PLAB 1 but has not taken PLAB 2, they have three years from the date of passing PLAB 1 to take and pass PLAB 2. If a candidate has passed both PLAB 1 and PLAB 2, their scores are valid for two years from the date of passing PLAB 2. In case you cleared PLAB part 2 over two years ago, you will be required to furnish additional proof of your competency and aptitude.

How to Work Abroad After Taking PLAB

The process of working in other countries after taking the PLAB exam may vary depending on the country. In some countries, passing the PLAB exam may be enough to obtain a medical license, while in others, additional requirements may be necessary.

1. Working in the UK

After passing the PLAB exam, candidates must complete a two-year Foundation Programme, followed by specialty training. Once they have completed their training, they can apply for a license to practice medicine in the UK.

2. Working in Australia

Candidates who have passed the PLAB exam, have GMC registration, and have been practicing medicine for more than a year in the UK may be eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia, but they may also be required to complete additional requirements, such as the Australian Medical Council (AMC) examination or an approved internship.

3. Working in New Zealand

Candidates who have passed the PLAB exam, have GMC registration, and have been practicing medicine for more than three years in the UK may be able to apply for medicine practice in New Zealand.

However, if you’ve passed only the PLAB 1 exam and want to move to New Zealand, you can skip part 1 of the country’s qualifying exam and directly appear for part 2. Once you pass the second part, you have to practice for one year under clinical supervision, and you’ll be able to register as a practitioner in New Zealand.

4. Working in Canada

Candidates who have passed the PLAB exam, have GMC registration, have completed the General Practitioner training and have 3-5 years of relevant experience in the UK may be eligible for licensure through the Medical Council of Canada (MCC), but they may also be required to complete additional requirements, such as the MCC Qualifying Examination (MCCQE) or an approved residency program.

5. Working in UAE

Candidates who have passed the PLAB exam, have GMC registration,  and have been practicing medicine for more than a year or two in the UK may be eligible for practice in UAE.

6. Working in Saudi Arabia

Candidates who have passed the PLAB exam, have GMC registration, and have been practicing medicine for more than a year or two in the UK may be eligible for practice in Saudi Arabia.

It's important for candidates to research and understand the specific requirements for obtaining a medical license in the country they wish to work in after taking the PLAB exam.

PLAB and GMC Registration: Places Where it is Recognized

The PLAB examination is accepted only in the UK. The exam helps all international medical graduates (IMGs) get GMC registration in the country. I think this is good because it allows me to practice both within the National Health Service (NHS) and in the private sector.

• GMC Online Account: You must have an online account with the General Medical Council (GMC) to start your registration process.
• PLAB 1 Booking: The PLAB 1 exam must be booked only with your online GMC account.
• PLAB 1 Preparation: Study all relevant medical topics for the PLAB 1 exam.
• PLAB 1 Exam: The PLAB 1 exam often covers several topics, the most common of which are medical knowledge and patient management.
• PLAB 2 Booking: The PLAB 2 exam slot should be booked instantly after you pass the PLAB 1 test. 
• PLAB 2 Preparation: Learn more about communication skills and other clinical situations to prepare for the PLAB 2 exam.
• PLAB 2 Exam: Attend the PLAB 2 exam in the UK to show your medical knowledge. 
• GMC Registration Application: Submit an application for GMC registration through your account. This should be done after passing both PLAB exams. 
• Verification of Qualifications: Provide documents to verify your primary medical qualification. You can also prove your English language proficiency with the same. 
• Fitness to Practice: Complete all health checks and character assessments. You may also have to undergo criminal record checks in some places.
• Registration Decision: Wait for the GMC's decision on your registration application. They will give a complete review of your qualifications and fitness to practice.
• Full GMC Registration: Upon approval, you will receive your GMC registration, which allows you to practice medicine in the UK.  
• Specialist Registration (Optional): If necessary, you may apply for specialist registration after completing the required training and assessments in your chosen specialty.
