What are the parts of the exam?

There are three main parts of the GRE: Analytical writing, verbal reasoning, and quantitative reasoning.

Analytical writing assessment

The analytical writing section or the essay section tests your potential to articulate your responses and thoughts to complex ideas in a reasoned and transparent way. There will be  two separate timed tasks in this assessment where you need to: 

  • Analyze an issue
  • Analyze an argument

Additionally, you will also get one of the following sections:

  • Research 
  • Unscored (can be either quantitative reasoning or verbal reasoning)

The verbal section of the exam assesses your analytical skills for written material and the relationships between the components of the sentences, such as words and concepts. You will receive questions such as:

  • Text completion
  • Sentence equivalence
  • Reading comprehension

Lastly, the quantitative reasoning section tests your basic numerical skills and your ability to solve problems through quantitative methods. The question types include:

  • Quantitative comparison
  • Problem-solving

It includes questions from the topics like algebra, geometry, arithmetic and data analysis.

Scores break-up

Students will be marked against a maximum mark of 340. The break-up and range of scores in GRE are as follows:

How many times is the exam conducted?

There is no fixed number of times that the exam has to be conducted. A student can take it whenever they are comfortable in the year but only a maximum of five attempts in a year.

Conducting body

The ETS or Educational Testing Services develops and administers the GRE. The scores are submitted online by the ETS to Stanford University.

Any alternatives to the exam

You can take the GMAT exam instead of the GRE for Business school applications. However, if you are applying to Engineering schools, you can only take the GRE.
