What is USMLE?

The United States Medical Licensing Examination, or USMLE, is an examination that people must pass to practice medicine in the United States. MBBS students in India can also take USMLE. They are eligible to appear for USMLE step 1 after successfully completing their second year.

The examination consists of three steps, each complementing the other. The exams aim to thoroughly assess the medical practitioner’s skills, the basic science of medicine, understanding and ability to apply medical knowledge and skills.

Thousands of international medical graduates take this exam every year.

The exam is sponsored by the regulatory bodies of the Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB) and the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME). The examination committee of USMLE includes professors in the field of medicine, clinicians, and several public members. They volunteer to create, review, and update the examination question papers and related materials.
