The Erasmus Mundus Scholarship aims at promoting improved higher educational quality through academic relationships and cooperation between Europe and other parts of the world. There are scholarships for students and researchers with academically bright records for following any Erasmus Mundus masterā€™s course or joint doctorate at two or more universities in Europe. There are almost 130 doctoral and masterā€™s programs to pick from, as far as aspirants of the Erasmus Mundus scholarship India are concerned. These scholarships promote better exchange between non-European universities and their European counterparts, with study durations ranging between three months and three years on average.Ā 

Reports state that 2,500 Indian nationals have been chosen for the scholarship from the time of its inception in the year 2004. Between 2009-13, Indian students have applied for joint courses and these scholarships either directly through course coordinators or as exchange options if their home universities were partners. 153 Indians got the scholarship in 2021 out of 2,756 awardees globally. As per reports, India has ranked first in this tally for the second year in succession.Ā 

Eligibility for Erasmus Mundus Scholarship

The Erasmus Mundus scholarship India criteria are as follows:Ā 

  • Should be an Indian national.Ā 
  • Should not have stayed for more than 12 months over the last 5 years in any eligible European country at the time of application submission.Ā 
  • Should not have received any similar scholarship under the Erasmus Mundus Action 2 project.Ā 
  • Mobilities may be carried by Indian nationals although they cannot take place between Indian institutions or European institutions in a partnership.Ā 
  • Target Group 1 represents those employed/enrolled in a partner university.Ā 
  • Target Group 2 is for those employed/enrolled in any Indian institution which is not a partner university or employed/enrolled in an associate university. This also applies to those getting their university degrees from Indian universities.Ā 
  • Target Group 3 applies for Indian nationals in pressing situations for political or social circumstances.Ā 
  • TG1 applicants may apply solely for exchange programs, while TG2 applicants may only apply for full-degree courses. TG3 applicants may apply only for a full-degree doctorate or masterā€™s courses.Ā 
  • Students may apply for UG programs if they attend the first-cycle Bachelor or higher education programme (equivalent) or get a university studies diploma.Ā 
  • They may apply for masterā€™s programs if they attend the second-cycle higher education course or equivalent or have finished three years of university education, obtaining a bachelor’s degree from India.Ā 
  • They may apply for doctorate courses if they attend doctorate programs or have got their masterā€™s degree from an Indian university.Ā 
  • Those attaining doctorate degrees in India may apply for post-doctorate programs.Ā 
  • Aspirants should meet minimum English language criteria, i.e. English 6 or English B at the upper-secondary level or any equivalent in an internationally acknowledged test of English proficiency (TOEFL or IELTS).Ā 

Benefits of Erasmus Mundus Scholarship

The scholarship amount varies as per the study level and duration. Indian students may get 24,000 Euros annually for masterā€™s courses and 60,000-130,000 Euros for joint doctorates spanning three years.Ā

Important Dates for Erasmus Mundus Scholarship

While the dates may vary, they usually open by mid-October, with application deadlines in early December. The deadline for supporting documents is generally around mid-December, with the results published by the end of March. For example, for 2022-23, the application deadline is 31st January 2022. The round has already opened on 15th December 2021.Ā 

Selection Criteria of Erasmus Mundus Scholarship

The Joint Admission Committee of the EMHRPP undertakes the entire process of admissions and the administrative coordinators and conveners also play a part in the process. The criteria include the following:Ā 

  • Competence in academics
  • Motivation letter
  • Letters of recommendation and work experience.Ā 

These three categories add a maximum point threshold that students may get. The final score of each candidate is then taken into account for selection. In most cases, the three categories carry 40, 20 and 40 points, respectively.
