The Master of Laws (Research) equips students for careers in advanced research, policy development, public service, tertiary teaching or professional leadership. It will enable you to acquire and develop sophisticated research and analysis skills, honed through work on a topic of your choice that expands legal thinking and understanding.

The Master of Laws is up to two years full-time and four years part-time and is awarded on the basis of a supervised thesis of 50,000 words. The thesis must make a substantial contribution to the knowledge of the subject concerned. Students are also required to undertake the compulsory research-support coursework unit, LAWS6077 Legal Research 1.

In this expert graduate course, law graduates develop advanced professional skills and knowledge of developments in the law, practice and scholarship of one or more areas of law. Students can focus on a specialised area or select from a broad range of electives for professional practice. The course enhances the capacity to undertake independent research, and provides options for a pathway to doctoral studies.

You investigate contemporary issues in law, practice and scholarship, and evaluate complex legal issues from theoretical, international and interdisciplinary perspectives.

This is a part-time degree offered over two academic years. It is designed in particular for lawyers and other human rights advocates who wish to pursue advanced studies in international human rights law, but may need to do so alongside work responsibilities.

On Warwick's LLM in International Corporate Governance and Financial Regulation, you will undertake in-depth comparative and contextual study of the regulation of the company. Studying the main topics in corporate governance and financial law will help prepare you for your future career. In the most recent Research Excellence Framework (REF), Warwick Law School was ranked 6th out of 67 Law Departments in terms of its Research Environment; 7th in terms of the Quality of its Research and 10th overall.

This course provides an opportunity to develop an advanced knowledge of corporate law. There is a (compulsory) foundation course providing a solid grounding in the subject. Having completed your choice of taught modules, you will then undertake an extended dissertation on a corporate law topic of your choice, supervised by a member of staff with expertise in their chosen subject area.

Teaching is by a mixture of lectures and smaller, student-led, seminar or tutorial groups. The dissertation is pursued by independent research with individual supervision. Students attending the course are drawn from a broad range of countries, and their previous academic or professional experiences enrich the course.

The School is host to the Durham Institute of Commercial and Corporate Law, and you are encouraged to participate in its many activities. The Library has extensive holdings of corporate law materials.

The Sheffield LLM is a flexible programme, giving you the opportunity to gain expert knowledge and skills across a diverse range of legal topics and to tailor the course to your own interests and career aspirations. 

Teaching is research-led and practice-oriented. You are encouraged to undertake your own independent research to support your learning. There are opportunities to get involved with conferences and research seminars, many of which involve visiting experts from the UK and overseas, as well as staff from the School of Law.

The course is delivered through seminars in each subject area, with assessment through essays and a dissertation.

The post-baccalaureate certificate program in Police Executive Administration is designed for graduate-level law enforcement students who wish to improve their knowledge in the policing field. This program provides professional development for aspiring law enforcement executives seeking to progress through police supervisory ranks. The work required for the certificate must be completed within three calendar years.

The Bloomberg School and the Georgetown University Law Center’s O’Neill Institute for National and Global Health Law offer the Master of Laws and the Master of Public Health (LLM/MPH) dual degree program.  Students are trained in public health practice and the role of law in solving critical global health challenges. Graduates earn the LLM degree in Global Health Law from Georgetown University and the MPH degree from the Bloomberg School. Both degrees are awarded upon completion of the program.  The dual degree program begins at the Bloomberg School. However, the MPH Practicum requirement is fulfilled during Year 2 by completing the O'Neill Institute Practicum. The MPH program office must approve the practicum proposal.

The LLM at The Peter A. Allard School of Law is a research-intensive degree that prepares graduates for opportunities in law teaching, legal research, policy development, public and governmental service, and the practice of law. The program attracts domestic and international students with common and civil law training.

The focal point of the degree is a thesis. Working closely with a supervising faculty member, students in the LLM program have the opportunity to and are expected to produce a substantial piece of original legal scholarship and of publishable quality.

The LL.M. and J.S.D. programs of graduate study in law are designed for foreign law graduates who wish to pursue advanced study and conduct independent research under the direction of the College of Law faculty. Two advanced degrees are conferred by the College of Law: the Master of Laws (LL.M.) degree and the Doctor of Science of Law (J.S.D.). Overall coordination of the graduate program is the responsibility of the Office of Graduate and International Programs, and individual inquiries should be addressed to this office. The Master of Studies in Law (M.S.L.) is a one-year, nonprofessional, terminal degree program designed for those who have had no legal training and who do not desire a professional law degree.
