Students will gain a comprehensive and critical understanding of theory and research relevant to special and inclusive education, as well as its applicability to policy and practice; with a specific focus on Specific Learning Difficulties (dyslexia)/literacy difficulties.

Through a variety of taught sessions, independent activities and group/individual assessments, students on the programme will graduate with a broad range of knowledge (including subject-specific knowledge), intellectual, academic and research skills; and practical and transferrable skills.  Learning will prepare students for a future within the field of inclusive education and/or the specialism outlined.

The Postgraduate Certificate (PGCert) in Ecological Survey Techniques is a one year, part-time course providing the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to conduct effective ecological field surveys and data analysis for a range of key taxa.

The Education MA is a flexible course that combines interdisciplinary perspectives on education with the development of analytical and core research skills to enable students to pursue their own subject-specific interests in education. It emphasises the development of a critical understanding of education policies and practices to promote capacities for independent thought and action in the classroom. The School of Education, Communication and Society is internationally recognised as a centre of research and teaching excellence in the field of education. Academics in the school are regarded as world- leading in the fields of sociology of education and critical pedagogy, many of whom continue to make a distinctive contribution to policy sociology and philosophy of education, as well as to educational practices, particularly to theories surrounding assessment.

Students enrolled in the Master of Science in Education Childhood Education 1-6 program may choose to specialize in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). The planned outcome of the STEM track is the ability to enable children to successfully meet the demands of the highly technological world in which they are growing up and will need to find jobs. This includes nurturing critical thinking skills and problem-solving abilities by thinking/acting like scientists and engineers. The Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and the NYS Common Core State Standards (CCSS) in Mathematics serve as a guide for course development and completion. 

• Teaching K-12

This program meets the requirements for an Oregon Teaching License with endorsement. WOU has not made a determination regarding licensure requirements in states other than Oregon and encourages students to check their state license board to determine if the program meets licensure requirements in their state. 

• Preparation for doctoral programs

The Reading Teacher emphasis is designed to enhance teachers' knowledge of and skills in teaching literacy in their classrooms or teaching small groups of struggling readers. In some districts, individuals with an appropriate reading teacher endorsement are eligible for employment as Title I reading teachers. The Illinois Reading Teacher Endorsement is available at the following grade levels to teachers who hold a State of Illinois Teaching Certificate: K-3, K-4, 5-8, and 9-12. Teachers seeking the 5-8 grade level Reading Teacher Endorsement in Illinois must have a State of Illinois middle school endorsement. If you have a State of Illinois early childhood certificate, you are only eligible for the K-3 grade level endorsement. If you have an State of Illinois elementary certificate, you are eligible for the K-4 grade level endorsement and the 5-8 grade level endorsement, if you have a State of Illinois middle school endorsement. If you have a State of Illinois 6-12 certificate, you are eligible for the 9-12 grade level endorsement.

The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine Master of Science in Anatomy Education program is designed to give students the training they need in order to successfully compete for teaching positions in anatomy at the community college level. Because such positions often also require some instruction in physiology and/or histology, introductory courses in these disciplines are also included in the program, along with training in pedagogical techniques. The program is also appropriate for students who wish to go on to research or educational support positions in anatomy, such as anatomy lab manager or surgical research coordinator.

The Department of Education offers a variety of programs for individuals currently in the field of education as well as for individuals wishing to enter the field. The programs include preparation for initial certification for a number of positions as well as for second certifications.

The Secondary Education program offers courses and fieldwork for students seeking an initial Pennsylvania Instructional I certificate, grades 7-12, in a specific academic area.

The mission of the Adult Learning and Education graduate program at UBC is to contribute to the creation, elaboration, exchange and application of knowledge concerning the education and learning of adults in diverse contexts. This includes the development of scholars and reflective practitioners who will shape society and its institutions in ways that promote lifelong education and learning for all in critical ways.

The Master’s of Education with a concentration in Equity, Inclusion, and Opportunity in Special Education program is designed around five major themes:

Teachers of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) are in high demand worldwide. Many programs do not focus on the combined needs of being deaf or hard of hearing and having a disability. 

This unique program prepares educators to understand, apply relevant research from multiple fields, and ultimately teach students who are deaf and/or hard of hearing in today’s schools.

Preparation is done through extensive coursework in Deaf history and culture, applied ASL in classroom settings, assistive and augmentative technologies, inclusive education philosophy and practice, and the positive impact of Deaf culture on hearing societies. Those seeking an initial license in Special Education Deaf and Hard of Hearing (PreK-12), who meet the licensure program requirements, follow the Initial Licensure program of study.
