Western Oregon University is a public institution at Monmouth in Oregon. It is ranked 55 in the Regional Universities West ranking by U.S. News (2022). The institution was founded in 1856 as a private institution while being integrated into the state framework in 1882 as a teacher training organization. 

The University attained independence in 2015, with its own directors’ board. It has accreditation from the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities. It has around 5,500 students with smaller class sizes. 

The main campus covers 160 acres at Monmouth, and the institution also has its own research institute. 

Leading study disciplines include aerospace studies, accounting, art and design, biology, chemistry, business, computer science, and many others. 

Notable alumni include photographer Jennifer Lyon, actor-painter Ariana Richards, and bodybuilder Shelley Beattie.
