The primary objectives of the program are to enrich the student's subject knowledge and give the student a rigorous experience in research and thesis-writing. Students can also acquire training and experience in teaching. Training in teaching is provided through courses and the mentored teaching of biology laboratories. Thus, students not only gain research experience, they also learn to be effective teachers and communicators.

The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) is a 39-48 credit program designed specifically for college graduates holding an appropriate liberal arts degree in Biology, Chemistry, English, Geology, History, or Mathematics who have not had a formal background in education and who wish to prepare for a teaching career in adolescence education grades 7-12.

Upon successful completion of the program, candidates will be recommended to the New York State Education Department for Initial/Professional Certification.

The Biological Sciences graduate program is designed flexibly to allow students, with their advisors, to mold and focus their program of study on professional interests and specific needs. To do this, students can draw from a broad range of graduate courses and select from a diverse and well-trained faculty for direction in research.

The Department of Biological Sciences is located in Trafton Science Center, one of the best science buildings in the state university system. Trafton Science Center presents an open, collaborative atmosphere for graduate study and research, and includes well-equipped research and classroom laboratories. Another attractive feature is Biology's proximity to other science departments, whose faculty members provide opportunities for multidisciplinary study in chemistry, mathematics, computer science, physics and electrical engineering.

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Eastern Illinois University provides advanced study in the major areas of chemistry, including analytical, biochemical, inorganic, organic, and physical. Students are taught by a well-trained and dedicated cohort of PhD. faculty each with strong a record of research grants, publications, and presentations. While the chemistry faculty have high expectations for students in the program, they are equally committed to their success. Most of the students complete the program in 24 months.

The Master of Science in Biology program serves those interested in advanced training in applied or basic biological research and teaching. The program also provides a basis for further graduate or professional studies.  The M.S. in Biology is broadly based, allowing students to tailor their courses to suit their interests. The Biology Department offers a combined B.A./M.S. or B.S./M.S. degree in Molecular and Cellular Biology. The combined degree is open only to Johns Hopkins University undergraduates majoring in Biology or Molecular and Cellular Biology.

The University of Scranton offers 3 distinct Master of Science programs through the Chemistry department - Biochemistry, Chemistry, Clinical Chemistry. The first chemistry graduate program at The University of Scranton was offered in 1969, the biochemistry program in 1972, and the clinical chemistry program in 1988.

Students typically enter the University's graduate programs in chemistry or biochemistry with undergraduate majors in chemistry, biology, or another natural science; in the case of the clinical chemistry program, they may also enter with an undergraduate major in medical technology.

The Master of Science (MS) in Biology program provides students with the knowledge and research skills that are necessary for students to attain their professional goals in several exciting core areas of the biological sciences. The program consists of two primary focal areas, coursework, and original research. Coursework prepares students to become professional biologists by introducing them to the wide variety of skills needed to address current and future biological problems. The research emphasis of this program will help students further enhance their skills and contribute to the body of knowledge in the field of biology while preparing for PhD programs or professional employment.

The two-year course of study consists of a combination of required coursework and a variety of elective courses and seminars that provide opportunities for departmental and interdisciplinary collaboration. Students begin the program with a provisional faculty advisor and spend the first year taking a common set of required courses. During the second year students take a combination of elective courses and seminars, and complete the program with the completion of a thesis or through a comprehensive exam and earn a Master’s of Science in Biology.

Integrative Genomics is an interdisciplinary graduate program that combines genomics, ecology, evolution, and physiology to better understand the mechanisms that are important to species in the wild. The program is designed to provide those seeking a Masters degree the necessary skills and concepts to work cooperatively with others in a research area that takes a systems-wide approach and incorporates an organism’s history and natural environment to understand the organization and expression of its many genes. Exposure to contemporary techniques and instrumentation in the laboratory and field prepares students for success in both academic and other biotechnology-related pursuits.

The Masters of Science in Biomedical Sciences is a one-year, full-time, non-thesis master’s program designed for students who have an undergraduate science degree or have completed the course prerequisites for medical school. This program is designed to begin mid-summer and end in May of the following year. It is expected that students will be studying in person on the Jonesboro, Arkansas campus.

If you are seeking entrance to medical schools and want to bolster your credentials for admission, or if you’re looking to pursue a career in science, this degree program will help you get there. Coursework includes instructional material and assessments typically taken by first-year medical students, as well as clinical inquiry courses where you’ll combine case-based learning with concept mapping and apply it in a clinical setting. The entire program focuses on both cognitive and behavioral skills with an emphasis on critical thinking and analysis and their relation to biomedical and clinical science.

For a student in the Master of Science in Biology program, there are a variety of concentrations that you can pursue within either the thesis or non-thesis option. The thesis option is designed for students who intend to pursue research-oriented careers in science. Many students who choose this option move into Ph.D. programs. The non-thesis option is designed for students who do not intend to pursue research-oriented careers in science. Most of these students intend to pursue either a medical or teaching career.

Regardless of what track you choose, all graduates of this program will successfully complete at least one course each in cellular/molecular, ecology/evolution and organismal biology before receiving a master's degree.

Upon completing the MS degree in the field of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, students will be able to:

1. Demonstrate an ability to understand and critically evaluate concepts, research accomplishments, and techniques in ecology and evolutionary biology.
2. Demonstrate independent problem solving and critical thinking skills by identifying novel research questions in ecology and evolutionary biology and synthesizing critical paths towards answering them. 
3. Demonstrate technical proficiency in a range of ecology and evolutionary biology research methods.
4. Demonstrate the effective written communication skills required for scientific publications, grant proposal submissions, and a thesis describing independent research.
5. Demonstrate the effective oral and visual communication skills necessary for articulating scientific findings and significance to diverse audiences.
