Graduates in the MS in Information Design and Data Visualization will be professional information designers and data visualization experts able to collaborate effectively in this dynamic and burgeoning field of practice and research, prepared to work in data-driven areas including design, technology, business, health, education and public institutions. The curriculum is designed to train students in design principles, critical inquiry and the analytical and creative practices needed to assume leadership roles in an evolving interdisciplinary field. Coursework focuses on the translation of data and information into visual languages, and the integration of theoretical, cognitive, and technical aspects of visualizations that engage a broad range of audiences. 

Embedded in CAMD’s information design and data visualization graduate course offerings, the MS is a designated STEM degree that strengthens students’ quantitative research skills and technical competencies. From this master’s program, students have multiple options to expand their advanced studies along diverse avenues, including adding graduate certificates in related topics, engaging in co-op opportunities, and applying to proceed academically into a terminal Master of Fine Arts degree.

The Department of Materials Design and Innovation, emphasizes a data driven perspective of materials discovery and design. We offer a unique program on the use of materials informatics that links experimental and computational perspectives of materials science and engineering. The MS in Human Centered Design blends art, design, psychology, and technology in a discipline that focuses on how people interact with machines. Whether you’re building smartphone apps or software for medical systems, business interfaces, or games, the user experience makes or breaks whether or not it’s successful.

The Digital Design & Fabrication (DDF) will prepare students to utilize modern digital fabrication methods in the design and fabrication process.  Modern methods of fabrication, such as 3D printing, have changed not only how objects are designed, but have also changed what can be designed and manufactured.  As modern fabrication technologies continue to advance, the worlds of design and manufacturing will change and merge into something much more seamless.  Through an approach that blurs traditional boundaries between art, engineering, design, fabrication and science, the DDF program will enable students to take full advantage of advanced manufacturing and fabrication techniques. Graduates will earn the Rhinoceros CAD certification (levels 1 & 2) and Stratasys Additive Manufacturing Certification.

Whether you are working as an instructional designer without a degree and just want certification, or would like to learn more about IDT and would like some recognition for your efforts, a certificate in instructional design from UND may be what you are looking for.

Three Instructional Design Certificates

UND offers three different 12-credit certificates in IDT. These IDT certificates are intended for those who have or do not need a master's degree, but would like to update or document their skill set in instructional design and technology.

These four-course IDT certificates can be attained in one year's time, and are fully transferrable into a master's program at any point during your course of study or past graduation. 

This master's program is designed to equip students in various industry contexts to work collaboratively with business leaders and subject matter experts to identify opportunities and recommend solutions to address learning needs; apply new and emerging technologies to design, develop, and implement innovative solutions to learning and performance problems; and monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of learning interventions using metrics, measures and analytics that align with business objectives. Students will be able to perform these functions individually and as part of interdisciplinary design teams using a variety of methodologies, learning technologies and digital courseware development packages.

• Projects range in scale from the design of discrete physical interventions, to the restructuring of urban districts, to the reimagining of mega-regions.
• During the first semester, program participants engage in design projects aimed at improving local urban conditions in the New York metropolitan region, whereas the second semester is dedicated to inventing new urban design paradigms in international settings.
• The program focuses on innovative urban design and planning practice that is informed by in-depth local analysis and global understanding of large-scale forces at work in city-making and urbanization.
• Using new and emergent techniques, students learn to analyze and visualize both the physical and non-physical forces shaping urban conditions to design in a variety of urban contexts and scales, and to critically evaluate the social, economic and ecological impact of their own urban design proposals and interventions.

Human-Computer Interaction and User Experience (HCI/UX) program is a graduate major that explores creative ideas, theories, and technologies to advance students’ understanding of the complex and tightly coupled relationships between people and computing systems. The program prepares students to create and evaluate technologies that support and complement human needs and abilities in a broad range of contexts such as work, wellness, home, entertainment, and artistic expression. The HCI/UX major is part of the Master of Science in Information (MSI) program, which prepares students for a range of careers related to user experience research, interface design, and software development.

The Post-Bachelor's Certificate Program in Human-Computer Interaction and User Experience (HCI/UX) provides foundations and practical skills for professionals who want to design and evaluate a wide variety of user experiences and computer interfaces. The certificate program may also serve as an on-ramp to a Master of Science in Information HCI/UX Major if completed with acceptable grade requirements.

The Master of Healthcare Design degree is a post-professional degree and one of the very few in the country focusing on the design of healthcare facilities. The MHCD program equips students with the knowledge and skills required to design spaces that are conducive to safety, satisfaction, and efficiency for all end users, including patients, staff, and caregivers. The MHD program is also designed for those professionals who want to have a deeper understanding of not just healthcare design, but of other drivers of healthcare innovations such as public policy, reimbursement, emerging technologies and what patient-centered care really means from the perspective of patients and families.

Upon graduation, our alumni are employed in healthcare-focused architecture and design firms. Kent State University's Healthcare Design program is also a member of the AIA's Design & Health Research Consortium.

Program curriculum is diverse by complementing required courses with electives from Colleges of Public Health, Nursing, and beyond. Connecting with professionals in the field is one of the core missions of the program, expanding students’ network and exposure to real-world projects.

To earn the degree, students must complete a master's project by designing a healthcare environment of their choice. Students will develop research-based design guidelines for their individual projects to guide their designs. The program takes one and a half or two years to complete, depending on course load.

The ID&T program at the Darden College of Education & Professional Studies provides students with a solid grounding in instructional design, cognitive theory and research to meet the challenges of instructional design professionals. Our wide variety of course offerings are designed to give the graduate a strong background in both the theory and practice of the field.

The M.A. in Instructional Design & Technology is designed to meet the needs of technology professionals in schools and other education related settings as well as business settings. The primary mission of the M.A in IDT program is to prepare professionals to improve learning and performance, with effective use of technology, employing a systematic and systemic instructional design process. This program values ethical, life-long, independent, and collaborative learning. It promotes social justice, respects diverse perspectives, and fosters leadership for change. This program uses hands-on and student-centered approaches.

Human-centered designers are multistage problem-solvers who analyze and foresee how likely users are to use a products and life-critical systems, testing user behavior in real-world environments. Technology, organizations, and jobs need to be designed by the participation of several disciplines, where creativity, as synthesis and integration, becomes the central asset to be learned. Life-critical systems include energy, medical, aerospace, education, and telecommunication systems. A master’s in human-centered design (HCD) from Florida Tech gives graduates the educational foundation and the hands-on research experience needed to enter a career in human-centered design.

MFA students focus on independently directed studio art practices guided by faculty mentors toward a research project that culminates in their thesis exhibition. Throughout the program work is produced in the Studio I-IV courses and discussed in the four Master Critique courses. These courses are thematically organized and change each semester to cover a range of current and relevant topics in Art and Design. Group critique sessions involving all MFA graduate students are the central feature of the Master Critique courses. Ideas and information gathered in these production and critique courses aid in directing the student toward his/her thesis. Elective courses support the student’s thesis work by developing and supplementing skills and knowledge outside the student’s primary studio art practice.

The M.Ed. in Learning, Design, and Technology is a 33 credit hour degree program for those pursuing learning, design and technology credentials as preparation for leadership and curriculum design in the Training and Development field; and, for those pursuing these credentials to satisfy requirements for the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction Instructional Technology Specialists: Computers.  The M.Ed. in Learning, Design, and Technology program is currently the only graduate LDT programs in North Carolina holding National Recognition status from the Association for Educational Communications and Technology (AECT).

The M.F.A. design program is an intense three-year course of study for students seeking professional preparation in scenic, costume, or lighting design.

Studio design courses, together with fully realized production experience, offer expectations found in the real world.

Jefferson’s MS in Geospatial Technology for Geodesign leverages GIS and advanced geospatial technologies in identifying and finding innovative solutions to urban design and urban planning problems. Emphasizing GIS-based tools, 3D parametric design and modeling, sustainable design approaches, collaboration and innovation within an integrated process, this STEM-designated graduate program is intended to empower students to find resilient solutions to 21st century urban challenges resulting from population growth, decreasing resources, natural disasters, and climate change. Geodesign is sustainability in practice, and our graduates are leaders in this innovative field.

Geospatial technology for geodesign students are directly involved in collaborative applied research projects with industry partners, state and federal agencies, and community partnerships. They work with advanced technologies including parametric 3D modeling, spatial data collection using emerging technologies such as LiDAR, UAVs (drones), UAV-based photogrammetry, advanced geospatial mobile applications, and BIM while they help develop and test new tools that inform future industry software. Graduates possess highly sought-after GIS skills and are well prepared for dynamic careers in interdisciplinary firms, state and federal agencies, NGOs, academia and more.

The MS in Geospatial Technology for Geodesign is a 36-credit post professional degree open to those interested in GIS and the allied design disciplines: architecture, landscape architecture, planning and engineering, as well as students with backgrounds or interest in GIS. Classes are offered on a full-time or part-time basis and are held in the evenings and Saturdays in order to meet the needs of our professional students.
