More About University of Colorado Boulder

Accreditation, Number of Students and Faculties

The Higher Learning Commission has accredited CU Boulder since 1913. (HLC). As an HLC-accredited institution, we have a responsibility to assess and evaluate the education we provide, as well as our mission, integrity, ethics, teaching and learning, resources, planning, and institutional effectiveness. We also have a responsibility to be transparent about how well and how our university achieves its objectives. HLC-accredited institutions, like CU Boulder, participate in a decennial process that is centred on quality control and institutional development in the context of HLC's Criteria for Accreditation.

University Campus, Facilities, Labs and Courses

CU Charles Klauder, an architect, created Boulder's distinctive architectural design, known as Tuscan Vernacular Revival. The university's earliest structures, including Old Main (1876) and Macky Auditorium (1923), were designed by Klauder in the same Collegiate Gothic architectural style as many East Coast colleges. These early plans were authorised in 1919. The largest geotechnical centrifuge in the country, as well as ion-implantation and microwave propagation facilities, spectrometers, electron and other microscopes, and a structural analysis facility, are all located in the Engineering Center on the north-east side of campus. On the northern side of the University of Colorado campus, close to 17th Street and University Avenue, is a sizable structure called Macky Auditorium that hosts a variety of lectures, plays, and musical acts. Colorado Governor Lee Knous proclaimed in 1947 that the University of Colorado Boulder would become the site of a memorial to the state's veterans. A remarkable fundraising effort was launched in response to a suggestion that this memorial be housed in a student union building. In October 1953, the University Memorial Center (UMC) officially opened its doors under the auspices of President Robert Stearns.

Streams, Number of Courses and Other Offerings

The Honours Program at CU is open to those looking for a challenge in their academic careers. The Honours Program was established in 1931 and is currently open to the top ten percent of entering freshmen and undergraduate participants with a 3.3 GPA or higher (on a 4.0 scale). Each semester, the programme offers more than 40 honour classes, all of which have a maximum enrolment of 15 students and are taught by tenure-track or tenured professors. By writing and presenting a thesis during their senior year, honours students can also graduate with honours, high honours, or highest honours. The Kittredge Honours Program allows the programme to continue into the dorms. A programme at the University of Colorado Boulder for top academics is called the Presidents Leadership Class.
