The Psychology program at New Paltz has been designed to reflect the varying needs and interests of undergraduate psychology majors. The interests of students who major or minor in psychology generally fall into one of three categories: (1) those who want a general background in psychology but don't intend to seek employment in the field of psychology, (2) those who want to apply some principles and techniques of psychology in an employment situation; and (3) those who want to pursue a career in psychology with a graduate degree.  

Psychology is an empirically based science. Therefore, it is desirable for psychology majors to have the skills to interpret and generate new information. To that end, courses in statistics and research methodology are required of all majors. In addition, psychology majors take a writing-intensive capstone seminar in which they demonstrate their mastery of the techniques and the content areas of the discipline. Students majoring in psychology are advised to acquire a broad range of training in the Liberal Arts. Taking a variety of elective courses in other disciplines is strongly recommended.

The Social Studies (non-teaching) program is designed for students to study from a wide variety of social science areas (i.e., anthropology, economics, ethnic studies, gender and women's studies, geography, history, political science, psychology, and sociology). This interdisciplinary approach is offered, and provides the student an opportunity to create a program to meet her or his personal academic needs. 

Many people seek out Psychology as a way to better understand others and themselves, or to be able to help others. Whether you see yourself in a clinical setting, or you want to be able to build top-notch people skills all employers seek, psychology is a great foundation.

If you like to work with people, want to better understand human behavior, and want to be able to communicate complex information, you can use a psychology degree to launch your career in education, law, criminal justice, healthcare, marketing, sales, and the non-profit sector.

The psychology curriculum emphasizes the scientific knowledge that psychologists have acquired and places this knowledge in the context of a liberal arts orientation. In addition to learning the subject matter of psychology, students also develop analytical and communication skills.

In the major, all students complete a course in research methods where they will collect data, analyze the results, and present their findings in a student forum. Students also have the option to pursue specific areas of interest through mentored undergraduate research, independent studies, and internships.

At the core of the curriculum is a set of carefully selected required courses that enable students to master basic psychological principles, theories, and methods. The curriculum in the Department of Psychology is designed to prepare students for graduate school, for careers, and for lifelong learning. At EIU, psychology is taught from both scientific and applied perspectives. With the background gained from their studies, graduates are prepared to pursue advanced training in psychology and related fields, or to begin work in occupations requiring an understanding of human behavior.

It is for students who want to focus solely on psychology and do not want to pursue a minor. This option requires more diverse psychology courses and some additional requirements.

The Psychology Department offers work leading to a Master of Science degree in the areas of clinical/community mental health and general experimental psychology, and a Specialist degree in school psychology. All programs are available exclusively at the WIU Macomb campus. The Department of Psychology offers work leading to the Specialist in School Psychology degree and the Master of Science degree in psychology in the areas of clinical/community mental health and general experimental psychology. Detailed descriptions of each of the programs may be obtained from the departmental office. The graduate programs in psychology are designed to serve: a) students interested in becoming practitioners in the field of school psychology or in clinical psychology, b) students interested in eventually pursuing doctoral degrees at other institutions, and c) students wishing to function as teachers, researchers, or in other related capacities in settings not requiring the doctorate.

The psychological and brain sciences are concerned with understanding the biological and psychological processes underlying animal and human behavior at all stages of development.

The undergraduate program leading to the baccalaureate degree is intended to provide students with a sound background in psychological and brain sciences and, at the same time, to prepare them for advanced study.

The program for doctoral students in psychological and brain sciences has a strong empirical focus and emphasizes research methodology. The broad aim of the graduate program is to train students to become scientists rather than practitioners.

The Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in Psychology is designed to prepare students to become scientifically literate citizens who apply an understanding of scientific principles and findings to benefit the communities they belong to. Successful graduates of the BA in Psychology will be familiar with the major concepts, theories and historical trends of psychology, and can apply their understanding of these ideas and principles to solve problems relating to behavior and mental processes. Through their experiences inside and outside the classroom, students learn to apply what they learn about human behavior and mental processes to improve their personal and social well-being, and to advance their personal and career goals.

Southern Utah University’s psychology bachelor’s degree program explores the fascinating science of behavior and mental processes. Students may choose a research-focused course of study or the clinical/counseling-focused option. A research-focused major can lead to the more scientific aspects of a career in psychology. A clinical/counseling focus to the major is more in line with a future in counseling or human services. In addition, by taking the courses for a human services specialization, students can earn a social work license. Psychology professors are deeply involved in helping students choose courses that support their career goals and form strong mentoring relationships with students in classes.

The Bachelor of Science degree in psychology at the University of Mount Union will help prepare students for a fulfilling career in psychology, one of the top ten in-demand careers.
