The International English Language Testing System or IELTS is an English language proficiency test taken for study, migration, or work. Indoor farming is a concept that has had some traction earlier and is not completely new today, because hothouse produce has been practiced for several years, especially pertaining to tomatoes and other crops. The new aspect is the scalability of this type of technology for accommodating this new addition to the global population by 2050. Many experts are of the opinion that wholly unique perspectives are needed for indoor farming models, with technology serving as a bedrock for the same. Vertical farming is one such innovation that has been proposed in this context. The concept basically pertains to growing crops and produce at multi-storied structures and that too in conditions that are environmentally regulated. They will be located within major urban centers, while taking off the load on transportation systems needed for ensuring food for urban consumers. It goes without saying that these farms have to be more affordable and simple to build along with adhering to all necessary safety protocols at the same time. If this concept can be executed efficiently, then we can witness a scenario where diverse food crops can be sustainably produced and there would also be production taking place throughout the year instead of a few specific seasons. This will also contribute to repairing/regenerating global ecosystems that have gone waste due to prolonged horizontal farming methods.
Human beings needed around 10,000 years for harnessing the knowledge of growing food crops that are the major consumables today. At the same time, we also tragically laid waste to agricultural and fertile land, turning these oases of greenery and flourishing ecosystems into arid or semi-arid regions. We also shifted towards increasing urbanization and 60% of the global population prefers living in major cities at present and vertically at that. Hence, for the masses, human beings have their own ways to find shelter from the vagaries of the environment although our food-bearing crops/plants are vulnerable to the same. Human beings still hope for better weather and minimal damage to food crops every year.
With climate change becoming a major threat to life itself, this approach does not work smoothly anymore. The world is already witnessing severe hurricanes, cyclones, floods, belligerent monsoon periods, and droughts which are impacting the entire food chain, contributing to the elimination of millions of crops annually. Those who believe in the vertical farming concept state that this will bring several benefits alongside. Crop production will take place throughout the year, as mentioned since they will be grown in optimal and artificially-regulated environments.
At the same time and most importantly, these crops will not be at the mercy of the elements including floods and long periods of drought and even pests that routinely harm crops. All the food that is produced, will be grown in an organic manner, completely doing away with fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides alike. This will naturally eliminate many harmful diseases and fatal ailments from the world and basically the entire system of life at large.
The entire vertical farming process will necessitate higher energy consumption although the production of methane will ensure energy restoration to power grids and this is possible through composing parts that are not edible. It will considerably lower the usage of fossil fuels, eliminating the requirement for tractors and other equipment along with ploughs and even transportation/shipping at a large scale.
However, one of the disadvantages of the system is that the plants will be needing artificially-generated light for survival. At the same time, consider the development of multi-storied buildings with zero natural lighting. This will need more costs and energy. However, the only solution lies in renewable and more affordable energy sources. Light generation may otherwise hinder the success of the concept.
Another new avatar of vertical farming is the method of using stacked trays for the growth of plants, which use rails for movement. This movement enables ample sunlight for plants periodically and the system is already being deployed in several regions of the world. This may function neatly in a single-storied facility like a greenhouse without the need for lighting overhead. However, the efficacy of the system is still being tested according to reports.
Vertical farming techniques may help eventually in catering to the growing food requirements of a rapidly increasing global population. However, the immediate scenario necessitates more actions for lowering the negative impacts on the environment that lead to disastrous consequences, especially regarding energy usage. It is quite possible that a majority of our food will be grown in these ways in the near future, although experts are pinning their hopes more on the utilization of space that is available on rooftops in urban zones.
