Here is a guide toward the IELTS reading task topic,’ This marvelous invention reading answers.’ You will find the passage along with the questions and their answers.
Out of all the multifarious creations of mankind, language should take the pole position. Many other inventions such as agriculture/farming, the wheel, sliced bread, and others may have impacted our existence from a material standpoint, although the invention of language is what contributed to making us human beings. In comparison to language, all other inventions throughout the world naturally fade away in terms of their overall significance, since whatever we have accomplished is dependent upon language, which is also the origination point for the same. Bereft of language, human beings could never have forayed into uncharted territories, exerting unmatched power over Nature and all the other animals in the world. Language is not just in the pole position or occupies the foremost position because it was the first invention. It is an immensely sophisticated tool in its own right, yet it is based on the concept of simplicity above all else: ‘this marvelous invention of composing out of twenty-five or thirty sounds that infinite variety of expressions which, whilst having in themselves no likeness to what is in our mind, allow us to disclose to others its whole secret, and to make known to those who cannot penetrate it all that we imagine, and all the various stirrings of our soul’.
The iconic grammarians from the French Port-Royal Abbey in proximity to Versailles used the above statements to refine the language and its essence in 1660. It was perhaps the most eloquent of such odes to the power of language and what it has accomplished so far. There is only a single flaw in all these praises and in paying tributes to the novel achievements of language, i.e. it hides a vital yet basic incongruity at a critical level. Language is the biggest invention of human beings, although it was never technically invented. This is the visible paradox that lies at the heart of our innate fascination with language itself and contains many intriguing secrets within it.
