The allocation of government funds between railways and roads is a crucial decision influencing national infrastructure and economic progress. Railways present notable advantages, including reduced traffic congestion, a lower environmental footprint, and stimulation of sustainable economic growth.

In IELTS writing, when writing an essay on why the government should spend money on railways rather than roads, a structured approach is needed; begin with an introduction succinctly presenting the issue and your viewpoint. Then, use body paragraphs to elaborate on the benefits of investing in railways and the comparative drawbacks of roads, supported by examples that justify why the government should spend money on railways.

Conclude by summarizing your key points and reiterating the importance of prioritizing railway funding.

Should Government Spend Money On Railways Rather Than Roads: Sample 1

Whether the government should be investing money in the country's railways and trains or on the good old roads is indeed a tricky debate. Both these forms of transport are highly populated, used by most citizens, and relatively more short-run compared to ships or airplanes.

In my opinion, yes, the government should technically be spending a lot more money on railways rather than road travel. One of the top reasons behind my stance is that railways are highly eco-friendly and help protect the environment. On the other hand, if you fix the roads, people will be keener on traveling with their personal vehicles, leading to increased carbon emissions and pollution.

But if the government aims to put more money into constructing railway lines– either tram lines or subways– more people would try this mode of transport. In fact, with proper guidelines and design, you can also build aesthetically pleasing and luxurious railways to attract the rich who would otherwise prefer air travel.

Additionally, railways also drive the economy in a positive direction. Through well-connected trams and trains, people from different cities can meet quickly and work together at a relatively lower price than a flight. For instance, China's biggest cities are connected by the best trains and railway networks.

Taking a cue from this mega-power nation, I believe the Indian government should also invest in improving and beautifying the Indian railways. By doing so, this form of transport will not be limited to just a few people or sects of the society but will attract every class of Indians.

Are Railways Better Form of Transport Than Roads for Government to Spend Money On: Sample 2

Governments all over the globe have struggled with the question of whether to invest more in railways or roads. I personally believe– it’s both. This is because roads and railways have almost the same importance in our country, a feature that most European countries cannot relate to.

In the case of trains, they can accommodate more passengers. Moreover, it is also common knowledge that with trains you will almost always reach on time because there are no issues concerning traffic. They are also faster and safer. Since there is no traffic congestion, the chances of accidents are also meager. Additionally, trains are cheap, so it doesn’t lead to a hole in your pocket.

While we discussed the advantages of trains and railways, cars and roads are equally vital. This is because it is challenging to pave paths across certain terrains. So, what happens in this case?

Well, roads are built for these areas. Apart from that, even in major cities, traveling to places that are nearby is done by road. Taking a train to such a location will be an issue or prove improbable.

So, in totality, the government should be spending equal amounts on the country's trains and roads to better connectivity in the country.

Moreover, railways drive the economy in a positive direction. Through well-connected trams and trains, people from different cities can meet quickly and work together at a relatively lower price than a flight. For instance, China's biggest cities are connected by the best trains and railway networks.

Taking a cue from this mega power nation, I believe India should also invest in improving and beautifying the Indian railways. By doing so, this form of transport will not be limited to just a few people or sects of the society but will attract every class of Indians.

Government Should Spend Money on Railways- Band 8 IELTS Sample Essay

Here is a sample for the essay topic government should spend money on railways rather than roads:

It is argued that the government should invest in railways rather than roads. Although some people may believe that roadways are essential, I completely agree with this viewpoint, as rail lines are more environmentally friendly and can help prevent traffic congestion. Funding railways can promote green travel. Primarily, investing in underground or tram lines can reduce carbon emissions. For example, if politicians invest in subways or trains, people will use public transportation more frequently. Additionally, wider and more efficient transportation services can decrease the number of commuters who drive to work. Conversely, investing in roads can increase the use of private vehicles, leading to more pollution.

An efficient transportation system can reduce traffic jams. Firstly, cars on streets and highways will be lower with more tram and subway lines available. For instance, people can stay on the road during peak hours. Furthermore, trains typically have a higher capacity than vehicles, allowing them to carry many passengers in a shorter time. Moreover, they can operate at relatively high speeds, making them a time-efficient alternative for certain travel routes. This, in turn, can reduce the impact of congestion.

To sum up, the government should invest in railways instead of roads. Improved services not only encourage eco-friendly travel but also play a crucial role in reducing the amount of traffic on the streets.

Government Should Spend Money on Railways- Band 7.5 IELTS Sample Essay

Here is a Band 7.5 IELTS sample essay highlighting the importance of the government should spend money on railways rather than roads.

In contemporary society, transportation has become increasingly significant. While some governments argue that funds should be allocated to improving railways, others believe it should be invested in new roads. I strongly support the former view. However, this essay aims to analyze railways' impact on the environment and society while considering how additional roads can benefit private car owners.

Firstly, a primary benefit of railways is their unmatched convenience to the planet, as they alleviate air pollution and enhance modern living. For instance, a study conducted at Ford revealed that the burning of fossil fuels decreased by 25% since the rise in popularity of the metro. Additionally, more individuals have chosen to use the metro since it saves time and money. Given this, public transportation such as metros and subways have proven to improve air quality and benefit citizens.

Secondly, it is important to recognize that additional roads can benefit individuals who prefer private transportation. For example, a study at the University of Idaho mentioned that 80% of adults in America own a vehicle. Therefore, it is evident that while public transportation is available, people still choose to get a car. Thus, new roads can help reduce traffic and improve access to remote areas.

In conclusion, it is essential to note that more railways can improve the environment and economy, while additional roads can benefit private car owners. Despite this, it is my opinion that governments should invest in railways. If railways continue to advance, the entire human population could benefit in the foreseeable future.

Government Should Spend Money on Railways- Band 7 IELTS Sample Essay

Below is an example of government should spend money on railways in the Band 7 IELTS sample essay.

Railways play a crucial role in providing cost-effective transportation. The debate about whether governments should invest in railways rather than roads has been ongoing for years. I strongly believe that expanding the train system should be prioritized due to its efficiency and sustainability.

On the one hand, trains offer numerous benefits. One of the biggest advantages is the cost savings on transport and travel. Rail fares are much cheaper than buses, taxis, or other forms of transportation, and they are convenient for transporting goods and luggage. For instance, I traveled to the capital city of Mongolia, Ulaanbaatar, by bus, which cost about $17 and seemed quite expensive. However, the train addressed this issue with its affordable rail fares. Similarly, when I traveled from Paris to Lyon, the train was a far more economical option than other means of transport.

On the other hand, building railways is similar to constructing roads, leading to significant issues such as financial constraints and economic decline. Building railways requires more funds than roads. Additionally, roads are easier to construct anywhere the government deems necessary. For example, in my country, only one railway connects China and Russia. Despite the limited number of railways, I have yet to experience any significant issues.

In conclusion, governments should prioritize investing in railways over roads as they benefit the environment and economy. However, this does not mean that roads should be entirely neglected, as they are also essential for transportation.

Government Should Spend Money on Railways- Band 6.5 IELTS Sample Essay

Here is an example illustrating the debate over whether the government should spend money on railways IELTS Band 6.5 sample essay.

In the modern era, a substantial amount of money is allocated to the construction and renovation of infrastructure, and due to the limited budget, authorities must decide which foundation is more necessary. Some individuals believe that railways should be prioritized over roads. I personally consider constructing roads more vital than railways, although allocating funds to each has its pros and cons. In this essay, I will discuss this matter thoroughly.

First of all, I think roads are of greater importance because every day, an increasing number of people travel by car, and their safety is related to the quality of the roads. If the roads are widened and better equipped, accidents will decrease. Moreover, with new roads, travel time and distance will be reduced. Additionally, by building better paths, there will be stops for drivers to rest. They can use these places if they feel dizzy or sleepy.

On the other hand, traveling by train is a crucial means of commuting between cities, and governments should undoubtedly allocate funds for this purpose. We shouldn’t ignore the fact that many travelers use trains, and renovating the old and damaged tracks and adding new ones will increase the comfort and quality of their journey.

To sum up, both areas are important, and neither can be ignored. It would be ideal to have enough money to invest in both, but we should prioritize if that is not possible. Building roads is more important due to the many people who commute daily.

Tips and Strategies to Write Good Scoring IELTS Essay

Here are some tips and strategies for writing a good scoring IELTS essay on government should spend money on railways rather than roads:

Tip 1: Understand the Assessment Criteria

The best way to impress the examiners is to comprehend what they’re looking for. The band descriptors for both Writing Task 1 and Task 2 can be downloaded for free. These resources outline the skills and behaviors that a test-taker needs to demonstrate for each band score (and for each of the four assessment criteria).

Tip 2: Carefully Read the Task Outline

It’s important to understand the tasks that you are completing fully. IELTS examiners will give higher scores to test-takers who fully address all parts of the task and show well-developed answers on the topic. Lastly, highlight or write down the different elements of the task scenario or question, and make sure you address all of these in your answer.

Tip 3: Plan Your Answers

Planning your answers can help you achieve higher marks for the coherence and cohesion assessment criteria. Examiners look for evidence that you can organize your ideas logically. Aim to cover one key topic in each paragraph and read your essay or letter to ensure the ideas flow well together.

Tip 4: Expand Your Vocabulary

IELTS examiners look for evidence that you can use a wide range of vocabulary correctly. You can improve your vocabulary by reading from different English language sources, such as:

  • Magazines
  • Newspapers
  • Blogs

Look up any words you don’t know and practice using them before your test. If you use the same words repeatedly, think about any other words you could use instead.

Tip 5: Use Variety of Sentence Structures

Use complex and simple sentence structures in your Writing task answers. Even if you’re comfortable using complex sentence structures, make sure some short, simple sentences break these up. Using too many complex sentence structures can make your test answers sound awkward.

Tip 6: Perfect Your Punctuation

Using the correct punctuation in the right places is extremely important. The correct punctuation can help your test answers flow in a way that showcases your English fluency. If you’re unsure what a certain punctuation symbol means, keep things simple and avoid using it if possible.

Tip 7: Know When to Use Formal Language

The formal language uses a professional or academic tone you might use while at work or university. Informal language is the more casual tone you might use when speaking to your friends. If the task you’re working on requires formal language, you should avoid using:

  • Slang
  • Cliches
  • Contractions

If you are taking the Academic Writing test, Tasks 1 and 2 must be answered using formal language. General Training test-takers should use formal language for Task 2; however, Task 1 may require formal or informal language.

Tip 8: Take Practice Tests

Achieving a great IELTS score takes time and planning. You can’t just book and take your test in a matter of days – no matter how strong your English skills are. Successful test-takers create a schedule to help them study everything they need to know before they sit an IELTS test. They practice all four English skills – Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking – as each is different.

FAQs

When was the last time that you traveled via train?

The last time I traveled by train and used the railways was pre-covid when I went to Dehardun to meet a friend. I still remember that the train journey was so much fun.

Are there services available on the trains?

Yes. You can avail food, TV, washrooms, charging points, Bluetooth connections, and sometimes Wi-Fi inside trains.

Why are railways better than roadways?

Compared to roads, railways offer a clear advantage. Their capacity to transport large volumes of people and goods significantly reduces the number of vehicles on the road, easing traffic congestion.  Furthermore, trains boast superior environmental credentials. They generate fewer emissions per passenger or freight unit than cars and trucks, making them a more sustainable option for our transportation needs.

What are the two advantages and two disadvantages of the railway?

While railways require substantial upfront investment for infrastructure, they offer economic benefits in the long run.  Large-scale transport of passengers and goods translates to economies of scale, making rail transport cheaper for long distances and bulk cargo.

Additionally, trains outperform cars on long journeys, achieving higher speeds and experiencing less disruption from traffic and weather.  However, a drawback of railways is their inflexibility. Unlike road transport with its door-to-door convenience, railways operate on fixed routes, potentially limiting accessibility for some users.

What is the role of the railway in the economy?

Railways play a crucial role in the economy by efficiently moving goods across regions and countries, helping businesses reach wider markets, and reducing transportation costs. Railways create construction, maintenance, and operations jobs, stimulating economic activity and contributing to regional development.
