International English Language Test System (IELTS) is a famous test designed for students who want to study, migrate or work abroad. The test comprises four sections – writing, listening, reading, and speaking. Government should spend money on railways rather than roads is a common topic in IELTS writing task 2. Candidates should present data while writing an essay on this topic.

Should the government spend money on railways rather than roads?: Sample 1

Whether the government should be investing money in the country's railways and trains or on the good old roads is indeed a tricky debate. Both these forms of transport are highly populated, used by most citizens, and relatively more short-run compared to ships or airplanes.

In my opinion, yes, the government should technically be spending a lot more money on railways rather than road travel. One of the top reasons behind my stance is that railways are highly eco-friendly and help protect the environment. On the other hand, if you fix the roads, the people will be keener on traveling with their personal vehicles, which will lead to increased carbon emissions and pollution.

But if the government aims to put more money into constructing railway lines– either tram lines or subways– more people would try this mode of transport. In fact, with proper guidelines and design, you can also build aesthetically pleasing and luxurious railways to attract the rich who would otherwise prefer air travel.

Additionally, railways also drive the economy in a positive direction. Through well-connected trams and trains, people from different cities can meet quickly and work together at a relatively lower price than a flight. For instance, China's biggest cities are connected by the best trains and railway networks.

Taking a cue from this mega power nation, I believe the Indian government should also invest in improving and beautifying the Indian railways. By doing so, this form of transport will not be limited to just a few people or sects of the society but will attract every class of Indians.

Are railways a better form of transport than roads for the government to spend money on?: Sample 2

Governments all over the globe have struggled with the question of whether to invest more in railways or roads. I personally believe– it’s both. This is because roads and railways have almost the same importance in our country, a feature that most European countries cannot relate.

In the case of trains, they can accommodate more passengers. Moreover, it is also common knowledge that with trains you will almost always reach on time because there are no issues concerning traffic. They are also faster and safer. Since there is no traffic congestion, the chances of accidents are also meager. Additionally, trains are cheap, so it doesn’t lead to a hole in your pocket.

While we discussed the advantages of trains and railways, cars and roads are equally vital. This is because it is challenging to pave paths across certain terrains. So, what happens in this case?

Well, roads are built for these areas. Apart from that, even in major cities, traveling to places that are nearby is done by road. Taking a train to such a location will be an issue or prove improbable.

So, in totality, the government should be spending equal amounts on the country's trains and roads to better connectivity in the country.

Moreover, railways drive the economy in a positive direction. Through well-connected trams and trains, people from different cities can meet quickly and work together at a relatively lower price than a flight. For instance, China's biggest cities are connected by the best trains and railway networks.

Taking a cue from this mega power nation, I believe India should also invest in improving and beautifying the Indian railways. By doing so, this form of transport will not be limited to just a few people or sects of the society but will attract every class of Indians.
