“The Maitri Fellowships Program will provide USD 3.5 million over four years to build links between future leaders, will support mid-career Australian and Indian professionals to collaborate on strategic research initiatives,” Payne said.

She also announced that the Australian government would provide USD 6 million for Maitri cultural partnerships to encourage cultural exchanges between the countries for four years.

Payne called the Maitri initiative a “strong positive” for the Australian education sector, currently recovering from the impact of COVID-19.

Australia, in recent times, has announced a slew of measures to attract foreign students and workers. Some of those include reopening borders for doubly vaccinated foreign citizens after almost two years and a 55 million package for visa fee refund among others.
