Work Permits of Europe

The work visa is usually granted to foreign nationals with an employment offer from a European business. Let us look at the major types of work permits available in various European countries:

The European Blue Card

The most commonly used work permit is the European Blue Card, which works in 25 of the 27 EU states. This card was initiated to mitigate the skill shortage in the European labor market. This permit allows highly skilled workers from outside the EU to:

Red White Red Card of Austria

The Austrian government launched the Red-White-Red Card for workers from non-EU nations. It offers work permits and residence permits. Fresh graduates and self-employed people can select the respective categories according to their qualifications.

  • Valid for 24 months and permits settlement and employment with the specified employer
  • Applicants need a fixed and regular income to cover living costs. The minimum income criteria (January 2023):
    • Singles: EUR 1,110.26
    • Couples: EUR 1,751.56
    • Additional: EUR 171.31 for each child
  • Compulsory health insurance coverage with benefits in Austria
  • Mandatory proof of accommodation or housing

The Critical Skills Permit in Ireland

The permit enables qualified people to contribute to the Irish economy, catering to skill shortages in the legal and software engineering sectors. International talent, especially graduate students from India, can seek several jobs in Europe.

Qualification criteria for critical skills permit include:

  • Relevant qualifications, skills, and experience required for the job
  • A minimum EUR 32,000 annual salary is needed for critical skills occupations
  • Minimum EUR 64,000 annual salary necessary for non-listed ineligible occupations
  • The job offer must be valid for at least two years

Note that a work permit will not get sanctioned for companies over 50% non-EEA nationals, except for Enterprise Ireland-supported start-ups.
