Established as the Bath School of Art in the year 1852 as a result of the Great Exhibition (1851), Bath Spa University is a public institution of higher education and research. In 1975, two institutions of higher education, Bath Teacher Training College and Bath College of Domestic Science merged to form the Bath College of Higher Education. In 1983, Bath Academy of Art joined the merged body. In the year 1992, the institution was granted the power to award degrees followed by a name change - Bath Spa University College in 1995. The institution transformed into a university in 2005 and adopted its current name, Bath Spa University in the same year (August 2005).
