You’ll become a competent practitioner with clinical skills and knowledge to assess, evaluate, formulate and implement treatment programmes in a diverse range of settings. 

Our Medical Physiology BSc degree provides an advanced course of study on how cells, tissues and organ systems function, and how together they carry out the activities needed for life. The course, delivered in central London, focuses on understanding normal human physiology; how and why it might be impaired, and the pathogenic mechanisms that lead to disease. All of which are essential for developing diagnostics and treatments. The course also features options to study abroad or to transfer to other Biomedical Science courses.

Physiology examines humans and other animals to learn how they function, grow and reproduce.

It studies how cells respond to changes in their environment and how cell functions are integrated in tissues, organs and living organisms.

The understanding of fundamental physiological principles is central to our ability to identify potential therapeutic targets for the treatment of diseases.

On this programme, you will study how information is sent from one cell to another through chemical or electrical signals. You will also learn about body systems such as:

• nutrition
• movement
• respiration
• reproduction

The course has been developed to offer theory, knowledge and practical skills development across the areas of clinical, health and neuropsychology. In addition, you'll receive training in professional practice and research methods.

The knowledge and skills you'll develop will help prepare you for a PhD in a clinical or health-related area, or a career as a Practitioner Psychologist.

You can study full-time over one year or part-time over two years.

Accredited by the National School of Healthcare Science and the Registration Council for Clinical Physiologists, this healthcare science degree will give you everything you need to be a professional in the physiological sciences. Once you’ve finished, you’ll be qualified to register as a clinical healthcare scientist in the physiological sciences.

You’ll study units that lay the groundwork in biochemistry and the physiological systems, as well as studying an academic core of topics in your chosen specialism of cardiac physiology or respiratory and sleep physiology. From there, you’ll study subjects specific to your chosen specialism. Whichever route is right for you, you’ll see that practice makes perfect – as you’ll do work-based clinical placements, completing a total of 50 weeks in all.

You’ll build the knowledge, clinical training and skills you’ll require as you prepare to team up with other health professionals in the important work of diagnosing and treating disease.

If you’re shortlisted for entry onto this programme, you must attend an online interview as part of the selection process. You’ll have to pass a medical examination and be vaccinated to work in medical fields. You’ll also need a satisfactory Disclosure and Barring Service certificate, which is completed through the University. This degree is not available to overseas applicants.

Our Physiological Sciences degree focuses on the study of the organ systems of the human body and how they control and maintain body function in both normal and pathophysiological states. This course prepares and develops students to become occupational therapists who are competent to work within therapeutic teams both in hospitals and in the community. They will work with client groups from the new-born to the elderly. Applicants should have a high level of personal integrity and initiative, tact and sound judgement, organisational ability, and a genuine interest in people.

Students who successfully complete the programme will be eligible to apply for registration with the Health Care Professions Council and full membership of the British Association of Occupational Therapists.

The course is also recognised by the World Federation of Occupational Therapists and employment opportunities exist in many parts of the world.

Physiotherapists play a vital role in enabling people to maximise their health, wellbeing and quality of life through movement, exercise, manual therapy and education.

Children's nursing is very popular and this course will enable you to become a registered children's nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).

You'll learn to provide evidence-based care for children and young people (birth to age 18), working in partnership with their families and with other health and social care professionals, in hospital and community settings.

You'll study modules relevant to all fields of nursing, as well as those that focus on children's nursing, you'll also learn about child development, the healthy child as well as children and young people who are acutely ill, or require complex, high dependency or palliative care.

Placement opportunities are at London's leading NHS hospitals such as Great Ormond Street, St George's, St Helier, Kingston, Royal Marsden, Chelsea and Westminster and Croydon Hospitals, as well as in community settings.

Physiology is the study of study of the mechanisms and functions within living systems from the ionic level up to the whole animal. To maintain healthy function, all of these aspects must operate optimally, including adapting to changes in the internal or external environment. This course will develop your understanding from the ionic level through to the integration of whole systems that are required to sustain life. This will provide a foundation for understanding how often subtle changes can underlie disease, how we are able to treat disease and how future generations of scientists may develop improved and new treatments.

The course is delivered in modules, allowing you some flexibility to focus on areas that align with your developing interests.

Over the programme, in addition to subject-specific knowledge, you will gain important transferable skills that will make you an attractive prospect for future employers.

This course is identical to the first three years of the MBiolSci in Medical Biosciences (Physiology).

If you have a DipHE in counselling (or an equivalent Level 5 counselling qualification), you can top it up to a Bachelor's degree on this 1-year course.

You'll build on the counselling skills (100 hours completed by the end of L5) and interpersonal abilities you gained in your previous studies by developing knowledge in advanced CBT counselling skills. You'll learn the latest trends and developments within CBT counselling theory and apply them to your practice, with professional development support in the form of discussion focus hubs, supervision and networking.

You'll also complete a research project on a topic that matches your interests and ambitions.

After the course, you could work as a cognitive behavioural therapist in areas such as education, the police service, the prison service and the voluntary sector. The advanced skills and practitioner experience you gain will allow you to work with a wider variety of clients with more complex needs.
