Our accredited BEng Mechanical Engineering is designed to start your journey to becoming a qualified professional mechanical engineer. The Advanced Mechanical Engineering MSc focuses on key skills required for a career in mechanical engineering. Warwick's School of Engineering, ranked 5th in the UK (Guardian University Guide 2021 for General Engineering), will provide you with versatility and depth of knowledge.

This course will provide graduates with advanced knowledge and understanding of Mechanical Engineering in three ways. Firstly, high-quality taught modules will introduce advanced Mechanical Engineering topics such as turbomachinery design, non-linear stress analysis, fluid mechanics, contact and friction. Secondly, a substantial group design element will equip students with the ability to carry out advanced design in multinational teams using appropriate design standards and sophisticated engineering analysis tools. Finally, a major research and development project allows the student to demonstrate the ability to work independently on a complex topic and demonstrate initiative in the solution of engineering challenges.

Durham University has many researchers tackling problems relevant to industry and society. Modules in design and experimental practice, will help you to develop the practical workshop and laboratory-based skills necessary for all engineers, and put core programme material into perspective and to practical use.

In Year 3, you’ll be able to choose modules that fit with your own interests and skill set. This includes Designing for a Circular Economy, Robotics, Failure of Materials, Network Engineering, Heat Exchange and Recovery and Process Safety and Loss Prevention. The third-year design project will provide an opportunity for you to concentrate on your specific interests, whilst working on an industry-focused area in collaboration with the School’s world-leading researchers.

Students who choose to take the MEng degree will learn advanced modules and carry out an industry or research-linked project that focuses on solving real engineering research and design problems. Recent projects have included assessing Britain’s Olympic bobsleigh and testing a combustor from a Rolls-Royce micro-gas turbine.

We place strong emphasis not only on the technical content of our modules, such as mechanics, thermodynamics and design, but also on the cross discipline skills vital for an engineer to function in the work place. This foundation year will help you build the base knowledge you need to progress to any of our mechanical engineering MEng degrees.

This is a full-time programme of study covering core mechanical engineering topics, including:

Driven by the School's industrial work and research, this programme has been designed in response to demand from industry to deliver the skills required to develop new technologies and meet the engineering challenges of the future.

The programme draws upon the heritage of Mechanical Engineering in the region and internationally recognised research within the school in areas such as Aerospace Composites, Polymers, Advanced Metal Forming and Nanotechnology. Such research within the school has led to several successful spinout companies and collaboration with a broad range of industrial sectors such as aerospace, automotive, materials handling, marine and energy. Staff teaching on the course have a wealth of industrial experience working with a wide range of companies.

In addition, the MSc programme seeks to allow graduates to demonstrate an advanced depth and integration of specialist Mechanical Engineering knowledge by successfully undertaking and completing a major dissertation based on original research or the implementation of new and advanced processes, procedures and technologies into the industrial environment.

This is the most flexible of our MEng degrees and covers fundamental engineering principles, while also giving you the freedom to follow individual interests in your third and fifth years. Your learning is complemented by a year working in a mechanical engineering company. This will put your academic studies into context and improve your skills and employability.

There's a strong focus on engineering design and modelling throughout the course, which gives you plenty of opportunities to apply the theoretical knowledge you gain to practical engineering problems. You'll also be introduced to the business and management context of engineering.

In your first two years, you'll study the core subjects required to be a successful mechanical engineer, including mathematics, dynamics, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics and the mechanical behaviour of materials.

This programme is designed for engineers who wish to advance their skills and knowledge to a level appropriate for a professional engineer at the cutting-edge of their profession. You will learn through a variety of techniques to gain a combination of technical, managerial and personal skills, and will be provided with opportunities to develop and practice them.

You will study four technical modules and three management modules, one of which is project based. This combination enables you to see engineering projects at three levels: the detailed technical level, the higher project level and the upper business/strategic level.

For the technical modules we offer a wide variety of options which allow you to customise your studies to suit your interests. The technical content is driven by our research and contact with industrial partners and is continually evolving. The management modules will equip you with the tools and techniques to plan, manage and close an engineering project and allow you to understand the interrelationships between decisions, teams and objectives. The modules also show how projects and project management relate to broader business and strategic situations

The course encompasses topics such as fluid-dynamics, stress analysis and numerical methods. In addition, you’ll receive training on the latest industry-standard design and solid modelling software, automated manufacturing techniques, as well as sensors, actuators and advanced control systems, which drive modern mechanical engineering products.

For your final year project, you may choose to make the most of Surrey’s partnership with the National Physical Laboratory. You could also explore the cross-disciplinary aspect of mechanical engineering, applying your skills in areas ranging from prosthetics to satellites.

Sustainability is becoming more and more important in the automotive industry. Car manufacturers and suppliers are considering how to implement sustainable processes in the development and manufacture of new vehicles.

 

At Sussex, we cover many aspects of sustainable automotive engineering. On this course, you’ll:

• gain fundamental engineering knowledge including materials, manufacturing processes, mechanics and electrical circuits
• learn CAD modelling, programming and numerical modelling
• explore low-emission vehicle propulsion, new-generation vehicle technology, electrical drive systems and vehicle dynamics.

Our research feeds directly into our teaching. You’ll benefit from our work in the Dynamics, Control, and Vehicle research group. Research projects include automotive on-board diagnostics systems, intelligent controllers and autonomous vehicles.

You’ll study in our Future Technologies Labs that incorporate computer suites and new automation/robotics facilities. There’s also a dedicated manufacturing lab with facilities such as CNC machines and 3-D printers. In our Formula Student projects, you’ll get the chance to be part of a team to design and build an electric single-seat racing car and enter it into a competition.

This degree will provide you with detailed knowledge of the state-of-the-art methodologies and techniques relevant to current and future strategies for the design of mechanical systems and components. We will pay particular attention to the development of investigative, modelling and computational strategies. The course covers fluid dynamics, solid structures, advanced and conventional materials and control systems.

This programme aims to develop the knowledge and skills of a Bachelor’s-level graduate Mechanical Engineering to Masters level through advanced teaching, design work and research. It provides an opportunity for candidates from a different Engineering background to develop key Mechanical Engineering knowledge and skills required for their professional development. A key objective of the programme is to be an accredited route to becoming a Chartered Engineer. Heriot-Watt is ranked 3rd in Scotland by The Complete University Guide 2021 and 2nd in Scotland by Guardian University Guide 2021 and The Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2021 for Mechanical Engineering. This programme makes use of Masters-level courses in the Energy Sciences and Manufacture and Design complemented with specialist courses from relevant MSc courses offered by the Institute. There is a growing need for an advanced mechanical engineering programme from our industry partners and this programme has been specifically developed to meet this need and to encourage students into further learning.
