The MSc in Medical or Human Sciences (by thesis) is ideal for you if you want to get involved in postgraduate research, and obtain the skills to progress to a PhD or MD.

The MSc by thesis gives you an opportunity to conduct an independent research project. You can work in a wide range of areas. Our current students are researching topics as diverse as cardiac function in high-risk surgical patients, enteral nutrition for pre-term infants, the correlation of vitamin D with genotype in populations, interprofessional health education, the identification and management of delirium in palliative care, and dental evolution in humans.

Throughout your degree, you will be supervised by a leading expert in the field and supported by a Hull York Medical School Thesis Advisory Panel.

The MSc by thesis is offered either full-time for one year or part-time for two years. If you have fewer than about 35 hours a week to devote to your studies, you should consider studying part-time. Part-time study is at least 17.5 hours per week.

This DPhil programme is for basic science graduates, clinical students and trainee clinicians who want to undertake advanced study in the field of cancer research. The programme provides a solid grounding in the study of oncology and cancer biology through the provision of advanced level seminars in the first year and subject specific training in your host department.

The Clinical Pharmacology course will give you the skills to design, analyse, interpret and report clinical research and clinical trials. It focuses on understanding what a drug is doing to the body (pharmacodynamics), what happens to a drug in the body (pharmacokinetics), and how drugs work in terms of treating a particular disease. It is designed for scientists, physicians, clinical scientists and allied health professionals interested in the clinical development process.

This programme examines the science behind the clinical practice of medicine and addresses key principles relating to human health and disease, such as:

Warwick's Molecular Analytical Science MSc is a part of 1+3 (MSc + PhD) programme in Warwick analytical Science Centre for Doctoral Training (AS CDT). This programme will develop your skills and prepare you for a research career. Analytical science supports research and development in key industries and underpins many aspects of biological and clinical sciences, environmental sciences and materials science. Our Medical Sciences degree is designed primarily for students who want to become medical doctors. Every year, there are ten places available on the A101 medicine programme at Cardiff University for suitably qualified graduates of this course and our graduates are also able to progress to graduate entry medicine at other universities.

The teaching of all subject areas, which range from anatomy and physiology to clinical skills and health policy, is reinforced by applying theoretical knowledge to clinical scenarios. Throughout the Medical Sciences degree you will gain valuable, hands-on clinical training and research experience from intensive work placements in local NHS facilities.

Our BSc Ophthalmic Dispensing is a unique, two-year fast-track program for those in the industry who want to gain qualifications while working.

The program blends online delivery with week-long, on-campus blocks, embedding learning with clinical and practical skills. You can see how the knowledge from the program can be applied in the real world within your workplace.

On successful completion of this program, you may have the opportunity to transfer onto the Optometry program if you meet the requirements to a satisfactory standard.

A fast-track format means you start your pre-registration in your last year and you could be a registered dispensing optician within two years of starting the course.

You’ll have access to our brand new purpose-built vision sciences facilities including specialist dispensing and refraction labs.

You will have the opportunity to learn within our on campus Eye Health Clinic, equivalent to a high street practice and open to members of the public.

Accredited by the Royal Society of Biology, this research-informed course is ideal for careers in the medical and healthcare professions or laboratory science. It integrates scientific research and clinical skills to develop your understanding of the human body in health and disease.

This course explores drug discovery, pharmacology, toxicology and examines the most effective ways that medicines are manufactured, packaged, stored and administered. You'll take part in innovative research, including new methods of drug delivery and drug synthesis.

Discover the diverse range of biochemical, genetic and microbiological approaches needed to understand life at a molecular level. You’ll have the opportunity to do a year-long, paid work placement as part of your degree.

Our students have found placements at global pharmaceutical companies such as GSK and Pfizer, but your placement doesn't have to be in the lab. You could apply your scientific knowledge and transferable skills outside of the bioscience industry in areas including market research, communications or business development.

A placement is a great opportunity to test out a career path and many students are offered a graduate-level job at the end. You'll pay reduced fees for the year you're on placement and you'll still have the support you need from your tutor and the University.

During the MSc by Research you will undertake a nine month research project with a three month write up of your dissertation.

In the course of your year of research we will train you in how to design, conduct, analyse and write up a medical sciences-related research project. You supervisor will be drawn from our academic staff. Depending on the project this may also involve partners from a local NHS trust.

You will learn to design, conduct and report independent and original research; to critically evaluate relevant literature; to develop problem solving skills; to analyse research data; to communicate the results of research; to understand scholarly conventions in the discipline area; and to have respect for intellectual integrity and the ethics of research.

Our professionally accredited BSc and MChem teach you the fundamentals of medicinal chemistry and encourage you to make your own discoveries. You’ll also have the opportunity to study modules delivered by our School of Biosciences and Medicine.

You can apply to study for either a BSc or an MChem. The MChem builds on the BSc with a masters year and is a direct route to a masters qualification. If you study for an MChem, you’ll spend a year doing industry-based research before returning for a final-year of masters-level modules.

If you’re interested in medical sciences but don’t have the required entry qualifications to join our BSc programme or are a mature student returning to education, our BSc with a Foundation Year is the right course for you.

The foundation year of this four-year course will introduce you to the key concepts and knowledge you need to progress to the BSc in Applied Medical Sciences. Following successful completion of the Foundation Year with at least a 60% overall average, students will progress onto Year 1 of the BSc. Students may also progress onto Year 1 of the Medical Pharmacology BSc programme (B210) or Population Health and Medical Sciences BSc programme (B211).

You will cover the fundamentals of biological chemistry, metabolism and homeostasis, microbiology and disease, molecular biology, data handling and analysis, and laboratory skills.

Progressing to the full BSc programme, you will gain a thorough grounding in the science underpinning modern medicine, studying a wide range of topics including human anatomy and physiology, cell biology, genetics, pharmacology, and neuroscience, together with their clinical and applied relevance.

You will develop an in-depth understanding of how the human body works, what happens when it goes wrong, how we currently treat disorders, and the potential for novel therapeutics.

This MSc in Molecular Genetics is a one-year full-time course for biological sciences graduates to learn and develop an understanding of current concepts in modern molecular genetics, and how to apply these techniques. The course is divided into a taught phase and extended research project within the College of Life Sciences. The taught phase provides the scientific knowledge underpinning the basis of modern techniques and the research project provides a unique opportunity to put these skills into practice.
