An exciting new course offering an alternative entry route into medicine for able students whose education has been impacted by adversity. Using a Problem Based Learning (PBL) approach, this course begins the journey towards the development of the academic, personal and professional skills needed for a career in medicine.

It aims to aid the transition to university through building a strong sense of belonging within the medical student community, as well as introducing you to our learning, teaching and assessment methods. Students successfully completing Year 0 will enrol directly onto Year 1 of the standard 5 Year BMBS Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery course with no further selection process.

Operating Department Practitioners (ODPs) work as part of a multidisciplinary team in a variety of surgical theatre specialities. You’ll gain high-quality clinical skills in anaesthetic, surgical and post-operative/anaesthetic care.

The Intercalated BSc in Primary Care is an exciting opportunity for medical students to engage further with a general practice clinical experience via clinical placements, whilst also studying aspects of primary care in more depth and undertaking a research project. It aims to inspire doctors and health care leaders of the future and give an excellent generalist grounding to students planning a career in both general practice and other medical careers, equipping them with the skills necessary to lead integrated and innovative care.

The fields of anatomy and developmental biology are closely interlinked.

Knowledge of anatomy is important in many areas of biology and medicine, including developmental biology.

Similarly, developmental biology tells us much about how normal anatomy is formed and maintained.

Understanding the anatomy and development of tissues and organs is essential to the emerging area of tissue repair.

Biochemistry is about understanding life on its smallest scale – the molecules and cells that make up organisms - and is one of four degree courses taught by the School of Life Sciences. This course will appeal to those who enjoy both biology and chemistry. You will study the structure and function of proteins and nucleic acids, how gene expression is controlled, how membranes, antibodies and hormones work, and how cells function within multicellular organisms.

The course has been developed to offer theory, knowledge and practical skills development across the areas of clinical, health and neuropsychology. In addition, you'll receive training in professional practice and research methods.

The knowledge and skills you'll develop will help prepare you for a PhD in a clinical or health-related area, or a career as a Practitioner Psychologist.

You can study full-time over one year or part-time over two years.

Optometrists are professional clinicians responsible for multiple aspects of vision care, specialising in preserving sight by diagnosing and treating visual problems. They’re trained to examine the eyes and detect disorders originating in the eye, brain or other parts of the body.

Studying Optometry at Aston will give you the practical clinical skills, theoretical knowledge and contact with real patients needed to prepare you for a rewarding career in this exciting field of healthcare.

Taught jointly by Queen Mary University of London's Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry and the School of Biological and Behavioural Sciences, this programme brings together core strengths of both departments. You’ll be taught by leading experts in every discipline, and have access to the labs, IT resources and libraries of each school.

You’ll build a strong foundation in biomedical science, including neuroanatomy, physiology, biochemistry, molecular biology, genetics and pharmacology. In the final year, you’ll choose from modules covering stem cells, the repair and regeneration of the nervous system, perspectives on brain disorders and cognitive neuroscience.

Final-year students can undertake their own laboratory-based research project or work with an existing research group at Queen Mary.

If you are interested in problem-solving, science and working with people the Optometry degree at Ulster will provide you with the training you need to become an Optometrist. At Ulster we offer a 3-year BSc (Hons) Optometry or a 4-year Masters with Honours Optometry degree. All students start on the BSc programme and, depending on availability and academic progress, students may choose to transfer onto the Masters option.

This full-time programme of study is based at the Coleraine campus where we have a well equipped Optometry Clinic which provides eye care services to the local population whilst also acting as the central teaching hub for our students.

If you know you have potential but want support before starting a degree in Pharmacy or a pharmacy- related degree, then this course could be perfect for you.

Successful completion of this course means you can join Year 2 of the Pharmacy MPharm programme. Alternatively, you may top-up your qualification to a BSc (Hons) in Pharmaceutical and Chemical Sciences or Pharmaceutical Science.

This course studies the main areas of pharmacy and the pharmaceutical and chemical sciences. You'll take the same modules as students of Year 1 Pharmacy, plus additional modules in chemistry, mathematics and other subjects. You'll be able to sit the same assessments as pharmacy students, so that you'll be ready for your career in pharmacy. Your scientific learning will be supported by academic and professional skills development.

Our BMedSci is approved by the Health and Care Professions Council. It provides you with all the necessary knowledge and training for professional practice as an orthoptist worldwide.

An orthoptist specialises in the investigation, diagnosis and management of visual defects and abnormalities of eye movement. You'll explore ocular misalignment (strabismus), eye-movement (ocular motility) disorders and ocular diseases in patients of all ages.

Year 1 introduces you to the topics of strabismus, clinical skills and optics, and gives you the scientific background you need to understand the normal eye. You'll also examine the importance of, and different approaches to, interpersonal and communication skills and how this relates to working in the NHS.

This advanced four-year initial degree in Osteopathy will give you the knowledge, skills, and experience you need to become a registered osteopath, qualified to diagnose and treat a wide range of health issues through manual therapy, tailored exercises, rehabilitation, and advice. 

You will gain a thorough understanding of anatomy, physiology, pathology and the psychology of pain, together with excellent clinical examination techniques, combining in-depth academic work with extensive practical clinical skills.

Are you interested in the role of genetics and molecular biology in understanding, diagnosing and treating disease, including clinical research, genetic testing and genetic counselling? On this four-year MBiolSci in Medical Bioscuences (Genetics) you will study a broad range of relevant topics, including proteins, gene expression, molecular cell biology, metabolism and molecular medicine and biomedical ethics.

This degree will give you an education and training in genetics with particular emphasis on its application to medicine. If you take this course you will be affiliated to our Department of Genetics, one of the largest genetics departments in the country with an excellent international reputation for research in a broad range of fields including human and medical genetics.

The first three years are identical to the Medical Genetics BSc, including the option to spend a Year in Industry or a Year Abroad between Years 2 and 3. Your fourth year then lets you focus on refining your research and lab skills - while also putting into practice your employability skills - by conducting a research project in one of six specialist areas.

The analytical and critical skills you acquire by studying an MBiolSci in Medical Sciences are particularly valued by PhD supervisors, researchers and employers in non-scientific fields.
