The History of the University of Pittsburgh

  • Pittsburgh Academy was a three-room wooden schoolhouse founded in 1787. It was renamed the Western University of Pittsburgh in 1819. 
  • The School of Medicine, founded as the Western Pennsylvania Medical College in 1886, became a part of the University in 1892. 
  • The school was renamed the University of Pittsburgh in 1908. The Cathedral of Learning, a 42-story Gothic skyscraper, is the most prominent landmark of the main campus. The same year the University opened an Oakland Campus. 
  • In 1913, it officially adopted the Panther as its mascot. 
  • In Johnstown, Pennsylvania, Pitt established its first regional campus in 1927. It was also among the first branch campuses of a major US university.
  • The University opened the new Pitt regional campuses in Bradford, Greensburg, and Titusville in 1963.

The University has had a rich tradition of discoveries, and its researchers and scientists are credited with a lot of modern-day inventions, including the Polio Vaccine created by Professor Jonathan Salk and his team. 

Education at the University of Pittsburgh
