Missouri Southern State University (MSSU) was established as Joplin Junior College held in the Joplin High School in 1937. The college was overseen by the University of Missouri's extension division and H.E. Blaine was appointed as its first dean. It was renamed as Jasper County Junior College in 1964. In 1965, legislation was passed forming the four-year institution called Missouri Southern College.
The new 320-acre campus was opened under the supervision of the first president Dr. Leon C. Billingsly in 1967. The college became Missouri Southern State College in 1972. It was granted the status of a university and received its current name in 2003. Currently, the university holds the accreditation of the Higher Learning Commission (HLC).
Located in Joplin, Missouri, in the foothills of the Ozark Mountains, the University is within minutes from some of the greatest scenery and waterways in the nation. It consists of numerous administrative, academic and recreational buildings that offer hosts of amenities. Spiva Library, the campus' first building, contains lots of books and archives that can be accessed by the students. Reynolds Hall houses the departments of chemical and physical sciences, biology, and environmental health and mathematics. Hearnes Hall is the main administrative building. Fine Arts Building is home to art and music departments and the Spiva Gallery. Other important buildings include Billingsly Student Centre, Kuhn Hall, Ummel Technology Centre, Mills Anderson Justice Centre, and Julio S. Leon Health Sciences Centre.
Missouri Southern serves over 5,000 students in 140 plus academic programs. It houses many international students from across the globe and a team of distinguished and highly qualified faculty members. The student-faculty ratio at the university is 19:1. The university is also home to many student organizations that offer facilities for various extracurricular activities. It provides students with various career services that assist them in pursuing their professional goals.
MSSU has a number of notable and successful alumni. Allen Barbre and Richard Jordan are professional footballers who have played in the NFL. Bob Beatty coaches the football team Trinity Shamrocks. Lonny Chapman was a popular actor known for appearing on several drama series broadcasted on television. Janet L. Kavandi is an astronaut at NASA and a scientist currently serving as the NASA Glenn Research Center's Director. Gary Nodler used to be a Missouri State Senator. J. Eddie Peck is a famous actor best known for playing the role of Jake Martin in 'All My Children' and Cole Howard in 'The Young and the Restless'. Jeff Speakman is an actor and a martial artist.
