In Madison, Wisconsin, there is a public land-grant research institution called the University of Wisconsin-Madison. UW-Madison, the official state university of Wisconsin and the main campus of the University of Wisconsin System, was established in 1848, the year Wisconsin became a state. It was the state of Wisconsin's first public university to be founded, and it is still the oldest and biggest. There are four National Historic Landmarks on the 933-acre main campus, which is near Lake Mendota. The university also owns and manages the 1,200-acre University of Wisconsin-Madison Arboretum, which is also a National Historic Landmark and is situated 4 miles south of the main campus.

The research library collection at the University of Wisconsin–Madison ranks 12th in North America. The campus is served by over 30 professional and specialized libraries. More than 11 million books from all around the world symbolize human enquiry throughout history in the campus library collections. The Division I-A of the NCAA is where the University of Wisconsin-Madison's athletic teams compete.
