In Melbourne, Australia, there is a public research university known as RMIT University, formally known as the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology.

Francis Ormond established RMIT in 1887 as a night school that offered courses in art, science, and technology in response to the Australian industrial revolution. Before combining with the Phillip Institute of Technology and becoming a public university in 1992, it was a private college for more than a century.

The college's campus union is called RMIT Link. Its purpose is to provide such facilities and services at RMIT's Australian campuses, as well as to sponsor and promote social, cultural, educational, sports, and recreational programs and activities among the RMIT community. Sports & Recreation and Arts & Culture are the two sections of Link. It is an organization that the RMIT Council controls. The independent organization that speaks for RMIT students is called the University Student Union (RUSU). John Storey Jr., after whom Storey Hall on the City campus is named, founded it in 1944. The goal of RUSU is to enhance student education, welfare, social life, and cultural activities while defending their rights and interests.
