The Production pathway of the Digital Media MA is designed to provide students with a theoretical knowledge of digital media and the practical skills to apply that knowledge to future developments in digital arts, practice and future research.

Film studies at Hull is a dynamic new teaching and research unit, which offers PhD research degrees in a range of fields, including television, American cinema, animation, horror and adaptation studies. Our research degrees are supervised by academic staff who are experts in their field. Film Studies staff contribute to television and radio programmes on film, and have spoken at the National Film Theatre, and at universities across Europe and North America.

The DPhil in Fine Art is designed to support research in contemporary art making (through the practice-led DPhil) and contemporary art history and theory (through the DPhil by written thesis only).

This course has been designed for students who want to deepen their knowledge of world cinemas and media. It offers an extensive range of options covering all aspects of film and media including theory, style, representation, spectatorship, philosophy, and critical media practice (filmmaking). This five-year programme combines the studio practice of fine art with the academic study of the history of art.

Unlike many fine art degrees, it provides an equal split between art practice and art history.

The MA in Creative Writing is an exciting new course at Durham University. Taught by award-winning writers Dr Paul Batchelor, Dr Naomi Booth, Kayo Chingonyi, Professor Claire Harman, Sunjeev Sahota, and Dr Sam Riviere. This is an academically rigorous degree that will develop your practical knowledge of writing poetry and prose fiction. You will receive structured support through writing workshops and one-to-one tutorials in order to develop their own ideas. The PGDip in Film and Screen Studies offers a unique combination of critical and creative approaches to the past and the future of audiovisual media.

The Postgraduate Diploma in Film and Screen Studies will equip you with skills and knowledge to address current transformations of moving image media in a globalized world, from the media in your pocket to architectural screens. It explores both the old and the new, philosophy and history, theory and practice, so as to help you understand the challenges of the 21st century's culture of moving images, changing artistic and political contexts as well as ever-developing technologies.

Our BA in Comparative Literature and Film Studies allows you to combine two complementary subjects and make connections between them.

In the first year you’ll be given a solid grounding in the discipline of literary studies, and an introduction to the history of film and key concepts in film studies.

From the second year you’ll choose modules from modern fairy tales to First World War literature and a host of themes from madness to migration, and cinema in France, Germany or India to film archaeology. You can even try your hand at screenwriting.

The wide range of optional modules in your second and third years means you can tailor your studies to the areas of literature and film which interest you most, and weight your studies towards one field or the other. You can also extend your degree by studying abroad for a year.

The Fine Art course reflects and supports the diversity of contemporary art practice including Painting, Video, Photography, Sculpture, Drawing, Performance, Printmaking, Time-based work, and studies in History and Theory. Studio Practice centres on your development of an art practice. You work in studios under tutorial guidance. Individual tutorials give focused advice and studio critiques encourage the exchange of ideas and the development of critical understanding. Studio spaces are located adjacent to relevant workshops. Workshops include painting methods, printmaking, wood and metal, moulding and casting, audio-visual and video, photography and plastics. Studio practice includes artwork made in sites, public space, online, through social interaction, as installation, alongside more familiar aesthetic forms.
