Mathematics at Imperial aims to present a wide range of mathematical ideas in a way that develops your critical and intellectual abilities.

The Department is home to several Fellows of the Royal Society and international prize winners, and our degrees are built around our research expertise in four core areas:

• Pure Mathematics
• Applied Mathematics and Mathematical Physics
• Mathematical Finance
• Statistics

Mathematicians have always been fascinated by numbers. One of the most famous problems is Fermat’s Last Theorem: if n≥3, the equation xn+yn=zn has no solutions with x, y, z all nonzero integers. An older problem is to show that one cannot construct a line of length 3√2 with ruler and compass, starting with a unit length.

Often the solution to a problem will require you to think outside its original framing. This is true here, and while you will see the second problem solved in your course, the first is far too deep and was famously solved by Andrew Wiles.

In applied mathematics we use mathematics to explain phenomena that occur in the real world. You can learn how a leopard gets its spots, explore quantum theory and relativity, or study the mathematics of stock markets.
 

Our Mathematics with Management & Finance BSc offers you the opportunity to study mathematics at an advanced level, and at the same time develop an understanding of the principles and developing trends in management and finance. This combination of modules is particularly valuable if you are considering a future career in management, especially in the finance sector. In your third year you will focus on topics relevant to financial mathematics. You may transfer to the four year Mathematics with Management & Finance with a Year Abroad BSc pathway and spend your third year studying abroad, before returning to complete a final year with us. This depends on you reaching a certain grade average and being accepted by a partner university.

You will develop a rigorous mindset and be introduced to new mathematical concepts not explored at school level.

This programme provides a broad understanding of mathematics before specialising in statistics.

This new way of approaching and analysing complex problems is a particularly valuable skill, applicable to many exciting career paths. A knowledge of statistics is valued by employers, so this programme gives you an excellent range of career options.

Our MORSE degree balances mathematical theory and its practical applications, with subject specialists from the departments of Mathematics, Statistics, Economics and Warwick Business School teaching core modules.

The three-year BSc Maths and Stats course combines a strong foundation in core mathematics and statistics with exciting recent developments in statistics and machine learning, providing a unique preparation for our data-driven future. A rigorous grounding in essential mathematical techniques and fundamental statistical principles and methods leads to the exploration of a wide range of topics central to modern statistics and machine learning, together with a year-long individual project module tackling a theoretical area or an applied problem in particular depth, possibly in collaboration with a company or other organisation.

Our Financial Mathematics MSci is ideal for students planning a career in the more quantitative areas of finance and banking, and for those wanting to undertake academic research.

In your first year, you’ll take modules that will give you a foundation in all the core areas of mathematics and statistics, and gain practical data analysis skills. In later years you’ll have the opportunity to study modules across financial and actuarial mathematics, statistical modelling, financial management, programming and more.

In your final year, you’ll take advanced modules and develop your research skills by completing an individual project in contemporary mathematical finance. Projects are supervised by one of the School’s academics, many of whom have industry experience in mathematical finance.

All our degrees focus on three core areas – pure mathematics, applied mathematics, and statistics – and you have the flexibility to tailor the combination of these to suit your interests.

On this degree, you will select mostly mathematics modules in the later stages. These include:

• introduction to vector calculus
• methods for solving differential equations
• algebra and linear algebra

You can also choose optional modules linked to the research expertise of our staff and learn about the latest developments in the discipline, such as advanced hydrodynamics, quantum mechanics, and Bayesian inference.

This flexible course gives you the freedom to explore lots of different areas of maths or tailor your course to your own interests. Once you’ve mastered the essentials of pure mathematics, applied mathematics, and probability and statistics, you’ll be able to choose from a wide variety of options. Topics range from differential geometry or algebraic topology, to codes and cryptography or the theory of relativity. 

We have a small but focused number of modules in the first year that cover all the maths essentials you’ll need for the rest of your degree. You can develop programming skills using Python and R, which can be applied to lots of jobs that involve data, and learn to use the typesetting software LaTeX, which mathematicians and statisticians use to present their work.

Shifting markets and an ever-changing political landscape make for a complex world. Every organisation – industrial, financial or governmental – needs to embrace technology and data to optimise their performance.

Smartphone use, the role of social media data, risk planning, retail patterns; all of these can be counted and analysed. They can also help forecast the future, deciding where to invest or what route to take. This needs creative, technically competent and business-savvy people; the kind of graduates our MORSE degree produces.

We have combined the highly influential subjects of Mathematics, Operational Research, Statistics and Economics into one coherent degree ideal for mathematically-gifted students who want to use numbers to solve real-world problems in business and industry.

In your first year you will gain a strong foundation in mathematics, operational research, statistics and economics. You then tailor your programme, developing a broad knowledge base or specialising in topics relevant to your future career.

Our courses help you build on your current knowledge and gain a strong foundation across the fundamentals of mathematics and statistics. This includes algebra, analysis, probability and advanced calculus.

In your third year, you’ll be able to choose from a broad range of optional modules in topics such as experimental design, asset pricing theory, mathematical theory of data science, Bayesian statistics, and graphs and networks.

Our Foundation Year in Mathematics is ideal if you want to pursue a degree in mathematics, but your qualifications do not meet the entry requirements for a three-year course.

In the Department of Mathematics, you’ll consolidate and develop your mathematical skills in new as well as familiar areas. After passing your Foundation Year, you can continue studying for a range of BSc degrees. Depending on your performance, you can study at MMath level.

Mathematics is one of the most fascinating and intellectually challenging subjects you can study. The School of Mathematics and Actuarial Science at the University of Leicester is home to an enthusiastic group of mathematicians, both staff and students.

Your MMath degree includes a final year research project which is not part of the BSc.
