The Genomic Medicine programme covers all aspects of genomic science and medicine, and will equip you with the knowledge and skills to be able to interpret and understand genomic data that increasingly impacts on service delivery to patients and the community.

The programme is aimed at students from a wide range of backgrounds, from basic scientists to all levels of healthcare professionals, and will provide a flexible, multi-disciplinary and multi-professional perspective in genomics, applied to clinical practice and medical research.

The training provided covers all aspects of genomic science and medicine (not merely DNA sequencing or detection of genetic variation), undertaken in one of the most cutting-edge scientific environments. The programme runs successfully through a combination of educational materials and opportunities to interact online alongside more traditional teaching methods. This blended format of delivery consists of teaching sessions (face-to-face or made available online), live webinars, discussion fora, formative and summative assessments administered through our virtual learning environment, and a range of resources to facilitate self-study and progression. This allows for much of the programme to be studied remotely if required.

Following this degree, many of our students have continued to clinical and non-clinical PhDs, to graduate medical degrees, graduate roles in industry and to the NHS Scientific Training Programme. We also have a large number of part-time students who are keen to develop their application of genomic medicine within their current professional role.

The programme includes collaborations with:

• the Institute of Cancer Research (providing the core Cancer Genomics Module)
• Brunel University London (providing the optional Economic Evaluation in Human Genomics Module)

As a student on the PGDip in Sleep Medicine, you will spend two years engaging in a comprehensive taught programme covering the physiology of sleep, through to clinical practice and societal implications. Delivery is mostly online, with a one-week residential component. You will engage regularly in real time with classmates and teaching faculty.

The Medical Affairs MSc course will give you the skills to operate as a bridge between the pharmaceutical industry and the wider medical community, including key thought leaders across a range of therapeutic specialisms, as well as with patient groups, regulatory authorities and beyond. The course builds from a sound appreciation of the clinical development of new medicines, to focus on understanding how to effectively link science and commercial activity, by providing scientific and commercial support for medicines. It is designed for scientists, physicians, pharmacists and allied health professionals.

Our six-year Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBChB) degree equips you with the knowledge, understanding and skills you need to become a Foundation Year 1 doctor.

You will look at biomedicine and sociology from a patient’s perspective.

The Doctor of Medicine degree scheme provides opportunities for clinically qualified candidates to undertake a two year Doctoral level research project at Lancaster.

Our links with the Lancaster Medical School and many NHS trusts provide a wide range of opportunities for medically related research. You will be supervised by a clinical supervisor and a member of academic staff in Biomedical and Life Sciences or the Medical School.

Nanomedicine is the interface of clinical medicine, pharmaceutics, regenerative medicine and nano(geno) toxicology. Increasing demand and awareness of nanotechnology applications in Medicine has lead to the emergence of Nanomedicine. Capitalising on the £22m infrastructure investment in the Centre for Nanohealth (CNH).

Suitable for anyone with a life sciences facing degree who is targeting industry facing employment in pharma or research careers through PhDs, students will tackle nano-enabled innovation in molecular medicine, drug development, advanced drug delivery and imaging/diagnostics. Pharmaceuticals and advanced therapeutics is embedded across these themes. In addition we have two focus areas, being Regenerative medicine (incorporating biomaterials) and nano(geno) toxicology which map to the core research themes of the School. These areas are furnished by expertise from the colleges of engineering and science, culminating in a multidisciplinary laboratory based research project underpinned by dedicated statistics/informatics modules and research design/ethics.
