The principal challenge facing the world’s growing population is how to maintain sustainable access to the natural resources – water, energy and food – that are necessary for us to enjoy a good quality of life, while protecting the environment.

The science and engineering behind understanding and solving this challenge lie at the heart of earth science, an interdisciplinary subject which encompasses physics, chemistry, mathematics and other sciences. It can be applied to the study of Earth to give us an understanding of how our planet works, from its internal core, crust and oceans, to the atmosphere and our solar system.

All our courses combine a strong traditional emphasis on observational and field skills with the numerical and analytical fundamental science required to understand Earth processes and systems quantitatively.

We also emphasise the development of transferable professional skills such as group working, problem-solving, drawing inferences from incomplete data, IT, and oral and written communication. You can expect a balance between theory and practice, including a variety of field trips in the UK and abroad.

This course aims to equip experienced CBT healthcare professionals with the enhanced CBT skills necessary to implement evidence-based treatment across a wide range of clinical presentations, and to disseminate these treatments as trainers and supervisors to other practitioners. 

The Imaging Sciences Intercalated BSc is a stand-alone study course designed to give you an in-depth understanding of the science and technology behind modern medical imaging techniques and an introduction to their clinical applications.

Question the concepts surrounding gender and international development on Warwick's MA. Offered by Warwick's Sociology Department, you will be able to choose from a wide range of cutting-edge specialist modules, looking out how gender is cross-cut by other differences, including sexuality, race and social class.

The PGCE Secondary Biology course is the first phase of three-year entitlement for beginning teachers. The first phase of the entitlement is the Core Content Framework and this is embedded into all of our ITE courses. The PGCE Secondary Biology course is accredited by the DfE, and upon successful completion you will be recommended for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). During our last Ofsted Inspection we were graded as “Outstanding” for all aspects of our provision.

Subject pedagogy (how to teach the subject for understanding) is explored in an innovative university / partnership model known as the POD (Professional Opportunities and Development). The ITE course is delivered using a blended approach and is research informed.

The process starts with an online interactive resource which introduces a weekly theme e.g., behaviour management, assessment, SEND and inclusion (all of which are components of the Core Content Framework).

The theme is then expanded upon in relation to your science specialism in a Teaching and Learning

Community (TLC) and finally theory and application come together in the POD (Sedgefield Community College, King James 1 Academy and St Bede’s School and Sixth Form College).

Beginning teachers work in classrooms in POD schools with expert staff to develop knowledge and strategies that can be drawn upon during their own teaching placement. Subject knowledge is enhanced through work with subject specific University staff and with subject experts from the POD setting.

We believe strongly that to be able to teach successfully you must acquire a good understanding of the 'big ideas' of science as well as learning about how to teach science. Core Science addresses your own understanding of the key concepts underpinning science, covering substantive and procedural knowledge in detail. We utilise research and evidence-informed progression toolkits for key concepts in science to provide:

• appropriately-sequenced steps for learning progression
• diagnostic questions to reveal preconceptions and common misunderstandings
• response activities to challenge misunderstandings and encourage conceptual development

Develop a critical, research-led approach to the study of global health systems and gain the key research skills you will need for doctoral-level study. Learn how you can make a difference in health policy while you explore the social determinants for health and the interface between politics and policy.

You'll develop your own bespoke course with our broad range of taught modules. You'll then complete a 24-week research project.

Regenerative medicine and stem cell research is a competitive area. Your studies will be centered around academia. You'll also have an opportunity to access industry experience in some cases.

The course covers molecular, cell and developmental biology of auditory and visual systems. The programme is closely aligned with the Centre for War and Diplomacy, which provides access to talks from world-leading scholars and practitioners.

Equally suited to those seeking professional development or pursuing a research career, this programme will support you to develop vital analytical skills and a deep understanding of the major forces shaping international relations in the past and present.

This course combines elements of traditional physics with the study of quantum technologies at the time they’re moving into real-world applications.

You’ll learn about existing quantum technologies, such as the devices used to transmit internet data and those behind the lasers in Blu-ray players.

During your first year, you can switch between any of our specialist physics courses. You can apply to study for either a BSc or an MPhys, a direct route to a masters qualification. On an MPhys, you’ll spend a year doing integrated research before returning for your final masters-level modules.

Environmental scientists will develop a robust understanding of the science underpinning the environmental and ecological challenges of the twenty-first century, such as climate change, pollution, conservation and natural resource management.

Drawing on material from Physical and Human Geography, Geosciences and Biological Sciences, students construct a degree with their own specialisms and foci, within an overall Environmental Science umbrella. This knowledge is supported by the development of core competencies in a range of laboratory, field and IT methods. Throughout, this course contains options for UK and international residential fieldwork. Since the 1990s Heriot-Watt University has had an internationally renowned research group in Mathematical Biology, Ecology and Medicine. This group includes Jonathan Sherratt, Andy White and Kevin Painter; all of whom are leading researchers in mathematical biology with strong international reputations. 

Building on the strength of this research group we are excited to be launching a brand new MSc Programme in Mathematical Biology Ecology and Medicine. The programme includes high level and high quality courses that will provide a comprehensive training in mathematical modelling of problems in the life sciences, in mathematical techniques to study these models, and in the use of data to both inform and test the models.
