Our part-time Early Childhood Foundation Degree provides a unique opportunity to bring together the components of your individual and professional identity, with your own inner wisdom and experiences of engaging with young children. Our aim as tutors is to promote student empowerment and to support you in developing your personal, professional and academic identities.

You will be taught by a highly experienced and passionate teaching team, who are actively involved in early childhood research, and who have their own subject specialisms and expertise within the early childhood field.

The Foundation Degree will help you to develop a range of academic, professional key skills and builds upon your knowledge and understanding of early childhood and your confidence as a person, professional and scholar.

It provides a unique blend of professional practice and academic rigor and you can progress from the part-time foundation degree to honours level in the 3rd year of study and achieve a BA (Hons) Early Childhood within four years.

This course contains face-2-face elements, we welcome applications from anyone who will be able to commit to these sessions.

The degree aims to help you develop an appropriate repertoire of professional knowledge and understanding to provide a foundation for effective teaching in a primary school; an in-depth knowledge and understanding of the core subjects of the National Curriculum; personal skills which would enable you to contribute to a school as a curriculum specialist in one of the core areas; knowledge and understanding of the other subjects in the primary curriculum to a level which will support effective teaching; understanding of schools and the National Curriculum as the framework within which children’s formal learning takes place; classroom effectiveness by drawing upon the expertise of practising teachers; a personal educational philosophy and a professional approach to your work; an understanding of the responsibilities and roles of the primary teacher.

The Primary Education degree offer closely aligns with the research focus and outputs of the department, offering evidence-based, recent and relevant materials alongside other academic elements, which will fully support the developing primary practitioner. There is an opportunity to personalise the degree from the range of optional modules on offer in Years 1 and 2. There are excellent opportunities for the consideration of international and intercultural perspectives; increasingly relevant with current UK policy looking to overseas pedagogies to inform curriculum development.

The course also offers forward-looking professional development opportunities such as the development of the role of the teacher-researcher and the opportunity to explore the role of subject leadership within schools for future career development.

Areas of study include a variety of disciplinary and ideological perspectives relating to early childhood development and education, along with research informed practice and the development of your reflective practice.

On this course you will integrate your existing knowledge, experience and skills with those acquired through engagement with the wide range of learning, teaching and assessment strategies. The course is rewarding and intellectually stimulating. It will provide you with opportunities to reflect on your professional role and explore the relationship between research and practice. Key values, issues and concepts pertinent to the development and education of children and young people will be debated to give you a better understanding of the contexts children, young people and families experience. There will be a special focus on the Early Years within some modules.

This course incorporates academic study and work based learning. There are four themes which are embedded throughout the programme; research and innovative intervention; employability; reflective professional practice and promotion of graduate attributes.

Our main focus in psychology is the study of human behaviour. Due to the popularity of the course, performance-related criteria are in place to manage entry into Honours (Year 4); this means the numbers admitted to Years 2 and 3 of the course are limited and dependent on performance.

Education is essential if you're hoping to study initial teacher education courses. We offer you the chance to develop knowledge of the education systems of Scotland and beyond, looking at issues including policy, social justice, equity and inclusion.

Combining education with other subjects provides opportunities for those who wish to work in professions associated with education, but who don't wish necessarily to become teachers. Please note that this course doesn't allow you to qualify as a teacher, though joint honours Education graduates will be able to explore postgraduate routes into teaching careers (via the Professional Graduate Diploma in Education).

The BSc (Hons) Sport Coaching degree at Cardiff Metropolitan University aims to develop critical individuals who appreciate the social, relational and dynamic nature of sport coaching. In doing so, the degree course challenges students through a variety of learning activities, including seminars, practical coaching sessions, and work related opportunities. The purpose is to move beyond merely the technical and tactical content of coaching in order to explore how coaches shape the learning and development of others. As such, the indicative content includes practice design, power, care, identity, ethics and micro-politics. At Cardiff Metropolitan University, we challenge assumptions to develop knowledge and understanding of how coaching is fundamentally people work. In this regard, our student-coaches are encouraged to examine how coaches negotiate, manage and orchestrate the sport performances of others. 
 

The Combined Honours programme offers you an opportunity to study two subjects at degree level, enabling you to benefit from high quality teaching across more than one subject.

English:

English is a well-established humanities discipline, which explores the role of the written word in defining and transforming human experience. The modern discipline of English is rooted in the study of literature and the language in which it is written. Students of English can expect to study all major periods and forms of literature and to learn how to analyse literary texts by drawing on disciplines such as history, sociology and politics. The study of English develops strong critical thinking and communication skills, attributes that are highly valued in humanities graduates by employers. At the Manchester campus, the English department has access to a community of internationally renowned writers and critics through the Manchester Writing School, one of the most successful of its kind in the UK. This is a unique and exclusive course, run in partnership with the EFL Trust. The course has been specifically designed for students who have already obtained a football-related Foundation Degree or equivalent qualification.

The BSc (Hons) Community Football Coaching and Administration (Top-Up) allows you to gain a full Bachelor of Science degree in less than a year. The course focuses on both the football and business-related knowledge needed to develop professionals for the football industry, you will consolidate your learning and start to specialise your work-based learning experience in line with your career ambitions. Developed in partnership with professional coaching organisations, this football coaching course allows you to study and gain work placements across the globe.

The BSc (Hons) Community Football Coaching and Administration course is a natural continuation of the Foundation Community Football Coaching & Development course, which is also delivered through blended learning. You will undertake studies at your local EFL club and attend 3 residential blocks at our world-leading USW Sport Park Campus.

As part of the partnership agreement between USW and the Football Association of Wales (FAW), USW football courses staff will operate a FAW UEFA B License course as an additional option. This course is exclusive to USW students and sits outside the regular domestic courses operated by FAW Coach Education. Places on the course are limited and as such, students interested in obtaining the additional qualification must meet the eligibility criteria and undergo a rigorous selection process.

BSc (Hons) Counselling, Coaching and Psychological Interventions Foundation Entry is an exciting and unique first step to working in the fields of counselling, wellbeing coaching and psychological wellbeing practitioner studies.

This foundation entry is the start of a four-year degree for anybody who is interested in working in the helping professions from a therapeutic perspective. The uniqueness of this course allows students to build on their strengths, regarding how they work with people.

In your foundation year you will gain all the skills and knowledge to progress onto the first year of the degree. Students all complete the same modules in year one of the program before selecting a chosen pathway through the remainder of the course, either pluralistic counselling, wellbeing coaching or psychological wellbeing practitioner routes. Our course examines contemporary issues in the field and includes a focus on public mental health and social prescribing for all students.

This course will introduce social pedagogy, an inclusive and holistic approach to wellbeing, learning and growth. A key principle is that the young person is in charge of their own life, and you work alongside them.

This course is endorsed by the Social Pedagogy Professional Association (SPPA).

You'll also gain an understanding of children's law and rights and the importance of safeguarding. Studies also include child development, life transitions, ethics and diversity, and relationship-based professional practice.

This degree has been designed to help prepare students to develop as digitally-trained educational professionals who are able to innovate, solve problems, and adapt to the changing demands of education.

Students can gain practical experience that can be applied in the real world. They will have the chance to undertake work experience in every year of study where they will be able to work closely with peers and academic staff during personal tutorial sessions, as well as undertaking put-it-into-practice (PiiP) weeks. We encourage students to challenge themselves through problem-based throughout their studies.

Early Childhood Studies with Early Years Practitioner Status (EYPS) offers a holistic approach to understanding children from birth to eight years. It marks the importance of early childhood as a significant period in life which is the basis for a life-long-learning, where children are viewed as capable and competent members of society.

On this course students are required to spend a minimum of 700 hours (approximately 20 weeks) on placement in early childhood settings and are required to display competency in National Occupational Standards to meet Social Care Wales standards.  Placements are full-time and set out in blocks of between five and ten weeks. Graduates will qualify with the Early Years Practitioner Status qualification.
