A unique undergraduate program that explores human behavior through participation in daily activities. This is an interdisciplinary degree that combines components of healthcare, behavioral psychology, and social science.

Occupational scientists study ways of measuring participation in daily living, develop new and innovative methods to help individuals engage in activities, and examine the impact of participation on an individual’s health and well-being. The program will provide the tools for students to understand research that can lead to new and innovative treatment options, helping individuals live healthier and more fulfilling lives.

This program also prepares students for application to an occupational therapy program or other advanced degree, or to work as a non-credentialed healthcare professional in a variety of settings.

Nutrition plays a vital role in maintaining health and in the prevention and treatment diseases. Registered Dietitians (RD)s and Registered Dietary Nutritionists (RDN)s are the food and nutrition experts who translate the science of nutrition into personalized recommendations to help people prevent and manage medical conditions, such as diabetes, cancer, heart disease, and many more. To become a RD, students must complete required coursework as well as supervised practice. Required courses include biology, chemistry, biochemistry, medical nutrition therapy, nutrition assessment, diet selection and planning, and food service systems management.

At Purdue, students complete all required coursework for dietetics in the Didactic Program in Nutrition and Dietetics, and then apply to either an outside dietetics internship or the Coordinated Program in Dietetics at Purdue to complete the required supervised practice.  Upon completion of supervised practice, students are eligible to sit for the national registration examination for dietitians.

The Family Nurse Practitioner Post-Master’s Certificate allows students who already have a Master’s of Science in Nursing to be certified as nurse practitioners for individuals and families. The post-master’s certificate will prepare you for advanced practice nursing in home health agencies, physicians’ offices, health maintenance organizations, family health centers, and clinics in both urban and rural communities.

Upon graduation, you will be eligible to be certified as family/individual nurse practitioners across the life span.

As a certified nurse practitioner, you’ll diagnose and treat acute, episodic or chronic illness, working with a physician and as part of a health care team. Nurse practitioners may order, perform or interpret diagnostic tests such as lab work and X-rays and may prescribe medication.

Nuclear Medicine Technology is a highly specialized allied healthcare field that utilizes radioactive materials in diagnosis, treatment of disease, and medical research. The nuclear medicine technologist prepares and administers radioactive chemical compounds called radiopharmaceuticals. Through the use of specialized cameras and radiation detecting instrumentation, the nuclear medicine technologist acquires and analyzes detailed images which aid the physician in diagnosing molecular, metabolic, physiological, anatomical, and pathological conditions. Nuclear medicine scanners may also be combined with computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to enhance the diagnostic capabilities of an imaging procedure. The four year Nuclear Medicine Technology Program curriculum consists of three years spent at the university completing required courses and electives. The fourth year is a 34 credit internship spent in professional education and experience. Agencies participating in the nuclear medicine technology program include, but are not limited to Mayo Clinic School of Health Sciences in Rochester, MN. Admission into the fourth year accredited program at Mayo Clinic School of Health Sciences is competitive. Therefore, admission to the program does not ensure placement into the fourth year internship. The BS degree is awarded by the university after successful completion of the internship year. Graduates will be eligible to take the professional certification examinations administered by the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board and /or the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists. Nuclear medicine technologists are employed in a wide variety of clinical settings including large and small community hospitals, university affiliated teaching hospitals and medical centers, outpatient and research imaging facilities, as well as private institutes. Adjunct faculty at the clinical site include: Matthew Ugorowski, M.Ed.,CNMT,PET; Michelle Bartel, CNMT; Mike Dick, CNMT; Heather Dewhirst, CNMT; and Holly Hintermeister, CNMT. Students accepted into the clinical internship will be responsible for: Proof of Medical / Hospitalization / Health Insurance; Health / Physical Exam; Tuberculosis (TB) testing; and Proof of Immunization which may include the following: Hepatitis B, Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Tetanus, Chickenpox (Varicella), and Influenza. Additionally, students will need to provide proof of CPR certification and may also be required to submit to Drug Screen Testing. Internship sites are required by law to do Background Checks on all students admitted to their nuclear medicine technology programs.

Since medical schools do not require any specific major, pre-med students may choose any course of study they desire. Most students prepare for medical schools by majoring in biological sciences or chemistry, but medical schools look for a well-rounded background in humanities, social sciences and service. EIU students should list pre-medicine as a "second major" used to track student interest in the career.

All students interested in a career in medicine should consult the chair of the Medical Professions Committee for information regarding admission requirements for specific medical schools. Due to the intense competition for admission, students will need to complete a bachelor's degree before entrance.

Work one-on-one with faculty to ensure you're taking the courses you'll need to enter medical school after you graduate. You'll build a strong foundation in the sciences but concentrate on a path that leads to becoming a medical professional.

The Program in Medicine, Science, and the Humanities is an interdisciplinary major that focuses on humanistic approaches to understanding the knowledge constituted by the natural sciences and medicine.  Students complete two introductory courses, a focus area in a core humanities area, additional courses in both the medical humanities and sciences, and foreign language through the intermediate level.  A minimum grade of C- or better is required for all courses applying towards major requirements and courses may not be taken satisfactory/unsatisfactory. Courses directly equivalent to JHU courses from study abroad or taken at other universities may count towards requirements; however non-direct equivalent courses must be approved by the director of undergraduate studies for the major.

Completion of the program leads to a BS in biology with a concentration in nuclear medicine technology and prepares the student for examinations leading to national certification as a nuclear medicine technologist. Exceptional residents often pursue scholarly activities in addition to fulfilling their other residency requirements. This program is designed for those residents who publish research and pursue scholarly activities in addition to their typical residency training, and who desire to pursue careers in clinical education in their field of interest.

Students pursuing an MS in Academic Medicine must designate a concentration. At this time the first available concentration is the field of otolaryngology.

The MS in Academic Medicine is designed to address topics of value to the academic physician, including training in leadership, education, ethics, professionalism, public health, health accreditation, statistics, bioepidemiology, research techniques, medical writing and editing, grant writing, research regulations, public speaking and academic health center management. These are topics typically important to educators, but not commonly covered in depth during residency training.

With a Bachelor of Science in Biology degree with a concentration in Pre-Medicine, graduates can successfully prepare for the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT). Physicians and surgeons have demanding education and training requirements including an undergraduate degree, four years of medical school and anywhere from 3 to 8 years of internship or residency requirements depending on their specialty.

Physicians examine patients, review medical histories, prescribe medications and make decisions concerning diagnostic tests. Other duties include counseling patients as to their healthcare, and treating injuries and diseases. Surgeons operate on patients.

Surgeons and physicians can pursue positions at clinics, hospitals, or in private or group practices. Graduates of the Lourdes University Bachelor of Science in Biology degree with a Pre-Medicine concentration worked closely with their undergraduate advisor and successfully gained entrance to medical school.

Nuclear medicine technology is the medical specialty that utilizes sealed and unsealed radioactive materials in the diagnosis and treatment of disease. The nuclear medicine technology program at Old Dominion University is designed to prepare individuals as entry-level nuclear medicine technologists.

The Master of Family Therapy Degree is offered by our Couple and Family Therapy (CFT) Program. Our CFT Program is a unique collaborative effort between two highly-respected institutions: Thomas Jefferson University and Council for Relationships. This is a full-time, two-year, 66-credit program, which is modeled on the core curriculum developed by the Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education (COAMFTE), focusing on key areas of contemporary practice, including:

• Couple and marital counseling
• Family therapy with children
• Families in transition (divorce and remarriage)
• Family violence
• Medical family therapy
• Sex therapy

The curriculum reflects a bio-psychosocial approach to understanding human behavior, viewing the behavior of individuals, couples, families and larger systems as the result of an interaction of biological, psychological, and social factors. It also reflects a commitment to training therapists to be aware of and sensitive to issues of cultural diversity and their impact on family functioning and the therapeutic process.

Nuclear medicine technologists are professionals in a medical specialty that uses radioactive tracers for diagnostic, therapeutic, and research purposes. Technologists generally are employed in hospitals and clinics. They work hand-in-hand with nuclear medicine physicians, health physicists, radiopharmacists, and radiochemists as an integral part of a highly trained specialty team.

In addition to using sophisticated detectors and computers to trace the movement and localization of radioactive tracers in the human body, nuclear medicine technologists have responsibilities that include radiation safety, quality control testing, radiopharmaceutical preparation and administration, and general patient care.
