Geographic Information Sciences at Eastern Illinois University

Study human-environment interactions and learn geospatial technologies like cartography, remote sensing and computational analysis. The major allows students to gain hands-on experience with computerized Geographic Information System (GIS) that integrate hardware, software, and data for capturing, managing, analyzing, and displaying all forms of geographically referenced information. GIS allows researchers to work with data in many ways that reveal relationships, patterns, and trends in the form of maps, globes, reports, and charts. Graduates of this program are prepared to apply their geographic knowledge and technical skills to address problems related to global climate change, regional planning and development, natural resources and much more.

Geography is the scientific study of the distribution of both physical and human features of the Earth’s surface. Geographers seek to describe, relate and explain the natural and cultural phenomena that distinguish places around the world. Geographers focus upon “where” and “why” questions concerning the global environment. Geography also functions as a bridge between the natural sciences; its perspective on the location of phenomena makes it unique among the academic disciplines. The process of change is a fundamental theme in geography and the examination of how humankind modifies the Earth is a continual emphasis. The study of geography is thus of vital concern to all citizens and provides graduates with numerous career opportunities in business, education, and government.

Students begin observing middle school students early in the program and begin working with them as tutors and classroom aides .The program emphasizes the use of technology and techniques to accommodate the needs of individual children .Students are recognized by the department?s Outstanding Pre-service Teaching Award (OPTA) for demonstrating excellence in academic coursework and teaching experiences.Many opportunities for participating in professional groups such as the WIU Student Education Association, Council for Exceptional Children, Kappa Delta Pi International Honor Society in Education and Society of Educators.
