The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) is a 39-48 credit program designed specifically for college graduates holding an appropriate liberal arts degree in Biology, Chemistry, English, Geology, History, or Mathematics who have not had a formal background in education and who wish to prepare for a teaching career in adolescence education grades 7-12.

Upon successful completion of the program, candidates will be recommended to the New York State Education Department for Initial/Professional Certification.

The Master of Arts in Sociology: General is designed for the person seeking a comprehensive, sociological understanding of the social world. The program strongly emphasizes the diversity of sociological theories and research methodologies. Upon this foundation, the program provides an in-depth apprenticeship in the discipline of sociology by combining core courses, diverse subject areas, and the opportunity for intensive academic specialization. This program is ideally suited for those who wish to continue their education, earn a Ph.D. and plan a career in college teaching or research. It is also appropriate for those who choose to pursue careers applying sociology in a variety of work settings.

Sociology is the study of social life, social change, and the social causes and consequences of human behavior. Sociologists understand social inequality, patterns of behavior, forces for social change and resistance, and how social systems work. The field also offers a range of research techniques that can be applied to virtually any aspect of social life, including: street crime and policing practices; disparities in income and family resources; poverty and unemployment; problems of peace and war; the forces that lead to globalization and its consequences for groups and communities around the world. Because sociologists address the most challenging issues of our time, it is an exciting discipline with expanding opportunities for a wide range of career paths.

The Professional Science Master's in Geographic Information Sciences (PSM in GISci) is an online interdisciplinary program designed to facilitate students' pursuit of an advanced degree with training in the Geographic Information Sciences, while simultaneously developing business skills highly valued by potential employers.

Geographic Information Systems have become a common information management and analysis tool used across many academic disciplines, government agencies and businesses.  Students from diverse backgrounds may advance their career potential by building knowledge in this area.  Practitioners in business, industry and government may be interested in acquiring base skills in this area to keep up with changing information technology in their work environment. The graduate certificate program is designed to provide a foundation in key aspects of geographic information systems. The demand for specialists with geographic information system (GIS) and related geospatial information technology backgrounds continues to expand.

East Carolina University's MA in sociology is a two-year program in which students may begin in fall or spring. The program consists of intensive seminars focusing on social theory and selected specialty areas (e.g., environmental; immigration; social movements). In addition, we offer advanced methodological training that provides students with the opportunity to learn how to collect, analyze, and interpret a range of data sets including in-depth interviews and surveys.

ECU's MA in Sociology has five options: 1) preparation for doctoral studies/thesis; 2) applied social research practicum; 3) community college teaching practicum, and two 36-credit extended course work only options: 4) non-thesis community college teaching; 5) non-thesis extended course work.

The BA/BS/Minor will give students the opportunity to earn a full major/minor in the field of anthropology. Students who obtain this degree will a) develop anthropological knowledge, enabling them to analyze trends in culture and society, b) methodological competence, learning to apply anthropological methods for learning about cultural/ideological differences and navigating them in daily life, and c) essential skills, written and spoken communication, analytic reading and writing, building rapport with people from different backgrounds. The Minor in Anthropology will allow students pursuing other majors to earn a credential that suggests critical thinking skills, writing ability, and cultural sensitivity.

Sociology is the systematic study of social behavior and human groups. As a discipline, it focuses on the influence of social relationships on people's attitudes and behavior and on identifying recurring patterns of behavior and the social forces for change in society. While the scope of sociology is broad and may entail the study of social groupings such as families, gangs, business firms, political parties, or schools, it is also concerned with social issues such as poverty, discrimination, and alienation.

This two-year degree program is based at SAIS Europe. The MAIA program provides students with the option to work with faculty advisors to develop and produce an original thesis. Alternatively students can base their program entirely on coursework, provided they complete at least one course which entails a major research project. MAIA students can pursue both years of the program at SAIS Europe in Bologna, Italy, or they can begin their studies at one of the established cooperative degree partners.

Students are taught under the American system of graduate education and can select courses based on their academic interests.

Arcadia University and its partner institution in France, the American Graduate School in Paris, jointly offer an accelerated Dual Masters program allowing students to earn two Master’s degrees in three years: a Master of Arts in International Peace and Conflict Resolution (IPCR) at Arcadia University, and a Master of Arts in International Relations and Diplomacy (IRD) at the American Graduate School in Paris. Students also have the opportunity to earn a certificate of concentration in the following areas of study, along with their M.A. in International Relations and Diplomacy: African Studies, Middle Eastern Studies, European Studies and Asian Studies, NGO Management. The accelerated dual degree program permits students to earn two Masters Degrees in three years. 

The Department of Anthropology offers the Master of Arts (M.A.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees in Anthropology. The M.A. is not offered as a terminal degree and is considered to be a step on the path to the Ph.D. Initial admission to the graduate program is thus offered only to applicants intending to pursue the Ph.D.

The objective of the M.A. in Social Sciences is to provide students with a survey of the concepts and ideas social scientists study with emphasis placed upon the domestic and international impact of global processes and global connectivity. While the program provides course work in each of the contributing disciplines of Anthropology, Economics, Geography, History, Political Science, and Sociology, the program also supports interdisciplinary learning and research through a colloquium series. This program is especially attractive to those pursuing a career in or seeking advancement in secondary school and community college teaching in the social sciences. Those interested in work in other types of educational and social science related fields, such as non-profit or non-governmental work, applied social sciences, and those interested in pursuing advanced degrees (Ph.D., J.D., etc.) may also benefit from this program.

The Professional Security Studies Department was jointly designated by the National Security Agency and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security as a National Center of Academic Excellence (effective for 2009-2014, extended to 2018, and renewed in 2018).

In the post-9/11 era, current and future leaders from all aspects of public safety, including law enforcement, security, fire service, emergency management, business, and public health, need to understand the concepts, theories and methods applicable to contemporary risk, terror and vulnerability. Students are increasingly pursuing educational avenues allowing them to function effectively in the new terror environment, where they are able to develop the competencies crucial to collaborate and coordinate with various organizational levels and disciplines.

In pursuit of the war on terror both at home and abroad, lack of long-term planning may be the most dangerous threat of all. New Jersey City University has demonstrated a long history of contemporary educational offerings. It is the only institution of higher education in the State of New Jersey offering a bachelor’s degree in Security, and did so long before the tragedy of 9/11. In considering the needs of current and future professionals in the field of Security, NJCU has initiated a strategy emphasizing prevention over response. It is time to create a common defense: a resilient generation of security professionals prepared to cope with a multitude of potential crises and scenarios. One vehicle of change is the development of rigorous, comprehensive academic programs incorporating intellectual debate, inclusion of diverse backgrounds, experience and views, and the development and demonstration of critical, practitioner-based competencies.

The degree programs are designed for practicing security leaders, as well as for those students who seek careers in this field. Courses are offered at New Jersey City University's main campus and online. Starting in Fall 2020 the degree can be fully completed online through distance-learning. 

The master's degree can be a first stage toward the doctorate or may be used by students wishing to apply knowledge of anthropology to a related field. Candidates must present a thesis or paper in lieu of a thesis acceptable to their advisers and another member of the graduate faculty within the department. We do not offer a terminal MA at this time and so this degree is typically only conferred to students already in our PhD program.
