Literature is a dynamic force for change. Hull English postgraduates gain insight into society, culture and politics by developing an understanding of the power of language. This MA provides students with a thorough grounding in research methods and practices.

Our MA in English can be tailor-made to your interests in either Creative Writing or English Literature, or both. In this fully flexible MA programme, you choose to focus on the writers, or forms of writing, that most interest you. Our MA English programme comes highly recommended, receiving 100% overall satisfaction from our MA students in the national 2018/19 Postgraduate Taught Experience Survey (PTES), with 100% agreeing that they would recommend the university as a place to study.

The MPhil in Greek and/or Latin Literature is a 21-month taught graduate course that can be used as a route to the DPhil, if then followed by at least two years of doctoral study. Applicants for the MPhil wishing to enter doctoral programmes elsewhere after their master's degree at Oxford are also welcomed.

The majority of students take the shorter MSt, which the faculty recommends as the default master's choice in Greek and/or Latin languages and literature. However, the MPhil is often taken by two groups of students and designed with them in mind: those who feel that they would benefit from two more years of taught education in Classics before embarking on a doctorate; and those who have a clear idea of the topic that they hope to research eventually for their doctorate, and who wish to start extensive work on this topic already in their master's dissertation.

Most students take the course as preparation for a research degree, and for such students it might offer, for instance, linguistic training; the opportunity to become acquainted with an ancillary discipline such as papyrology; engagement with a particular author's texts at a deeper level; and/or textual criticism of Greek and/or Latin; or, reception studies. The MPhil also offers, through an obligatory dissertation, the first steps in actual research and the extended presentation of a scholarly argument.

Our innovative Modern Languages, Literature and Culture MA gives you the opportunity to deepen your knowledge of one or more of the languages and cultures of the French, German, Portuguese and Spanish-speaking worlds. You can do a joint or single language MA that enables you to develop your existent linguistic and cultural skills or you can take our MA without any prior language skills in French, German, Spanish or Portuguese. You'll be able to choose from the widest range of modules in the UK, from the medieval period to the contemporary, covering film, literature, the visual arts, drama, philosophy, cultural memory and history. Exceptionally, we are delighted to be able to offer four scholarships for prospective students who will follow the French/joint-French or SPLAS/joint-SPLAS pathway in 21/22. Many of the basic concepts underlying Western society found expression for the first time in ancient Greek or Latin, and - together with English and Scots - they are the language of many highly influential literary works.

Studying Scottish Literature and Classics helps us understand the world in which we live now, as well as shedding light on the past. It prepares you to contribute to a society in which an understanding of texts of all kinds is crucially important.

This programme aims to develop your critical, analytic, linguistic and creative skills by engaging with a broad range of texts and a variety of approaches to reading.

You will explore the cultural contexts of all major periods of Scottish literature from the late Middle Ages to the present.

You can choose to take a Greek, Latin or non-language pathway through Classics study.

Our MA Comparative Literary and Cultural Studies will give you a thorough grounding in comparative literature and cultural studies in the context of modern languages. This multidisciplinary, flexible course also allows you to explore the cultures of a variety of language-speaking areas: French, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese and Brazilian, and Spanish and Latin American. You can take a broadly comparative pathway through the degree or choose to engage with one or more specific language-speaking areas. 

The course brings together a team of renowned academic experts in cultural studies, visual studies, linguistics, comparative literature and cultures, history and thought. We will help you steer a pathway through the course that reflects your specific interests, career and personal ambitions, and language knowledge. You will be able to choose whether you study texts in the original language(s) or in English translation; if you work in the original language(s) this will be reflected in the final degree title (e.g. MA French and Spanish).
