Biotechnology Engineering in USA

The B.S. in biotechnology at UNH Manchester is designed to:

1. allow students to earn a baccalaureate degree in biotechnology at UNH;
2. allow students to combine study in biotechnology with other programs and disciplines by completing a minor, or a self-designed set of elective courses along with their biotechnology degree;
3. provide an opportunity for students to complete a baccalaureate degree in biology while preparing to pursue a Master's degree in biology, biotechnology, or other fields. These degree programs could be undertaken after completion of the B.A. Alternatively, UNH offers several accelerated Master's programs where excellent senior students in the Biological Sciences major can complete coursework towards their undergraduate and graduate degrees at the same time;
4. allow students to complete a major in biotechnology while taking required courses in education in preparation for the five-year M.A.T. or M.Ed. programs and state certification in secondary science education; or alternative state certification pathway;
5. provide an opportunity for students to complete a baccalaureate degree in biotechnology while completing the required courses for admission to medical, dental, veterinary, physician assistant, pharmacy, physical therapy, optometry, and other professional or graduate programs.
   1. allow students to complete a baccalaureate degree in biotechnology while completing the required courses for admission to graduate research programs (M.S. or Ph.D.) in the life sciences and related fields.

The MS in Biotechnology program offers a comprehensive exploration of basic science, applied science, and lab science, with a biotechnology focus. The program gives students a solid grounding in biochemistry, molecular biology, cell biology, genomics, and proteomics, and the flexibility for students to tailor elective coursework to meet their individual career goals. In addition to the general degree, the program offers seven different concentrations:

• Biodefense
• Bioinformatics
• Biotechnology Enterprise
• Molecular Target and Drug Discovery Technologies
• Regulatory Affairs
• Regenerative and Stem Cell Technologies
• Health Science Intensive - Must apply for this concentration

Thus, students can choose to solely focus on strengthening their science knowledge and research skills, or to also develop the skills to lead lab teams, make development and planning decisions, create and apply research modalities to large projects, and take the reins of management and marketing decisions.

After a core curriculum in humanities and research principles and practices, you’ll gain a solid foundation in biology, chemistry, and cell and molecular biology through our innovative, curriculum. You’ll also undertake research side-by-side with faculty scientists in areas such as virology, bioprocessing, and even entrepreneurial technology and innovation management.

The Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering (ABEN) program prepares students for careers in:

• Machine Systems Engineering – for mechanical equipment and power units such as tractors and other equipment
• Process Engineering – for food, feed, fiber, biofuels, and other bioproducts
• Natural Resources and Environmental Systems Engineering – for soil, water, air, waste, and other areas

Graduates design machines, processes, and natural resource systems. They solve problems using mathematics and applying physical, biological and engineering sciences. Agricultural and biosystems engineers address society’s challenges in food, energy and water.

 The Bachelor of Science in Biotechnology Engineering degree at HPU involves the design, development, and application of innovative technologies, products, and/or environmentally sustainable systems through the efficient use of biological resources. Biotechnology specializations include those related to bioenvironmental engineering and bioprocess engineering. Bioenvironmental engineering is the application of engineering principles to the natural environment and its ecosystems, for preserving and/or improving environmental quality of life. Bioenvironmental engineering solutions may seek to address topics of concern in soil ecology, environmental protection, environmental toxicology, waste treatment and management, land treatment, air quality, renewable biofuels, and ground water hydrology. Bioprocess engineering is the application of engineering principles to the design, construction, integration, and/or maintenance of environmentally responsible systems with the use of biological materials for process sustainability and/or improvement. Bioprocess engineers may be concerned with food manufacturing processes, industrial hygiene, emergency response systems, environmental systems, food, chemical, or pharmaceutical processing and packaging systems and apply innovative solutions that incorporate biomaterials or bioresources such as cells or molecules from plant or animal matter or by-products, toward environmental and system sustainability. The HPU Bachelor of Science in Biotechnology Engineering is a 4 year program. HPU Bachelor of Science in Biotechnology Engineering graduates will find employment in bioenvironmental or bioprocess engineering positions, within sectors such as agriculture, environmental, healthcare, food manufacturing, and pharmaceutical industries.
