The curriculum includes specialized coursework in improvement science, systems thinking and building networked communities. Test-prep resources and seminars are aligned to the licensure exam. Principal certification in Pennsylvania requires a master’s degree. If you already have a master’s degree, completion of these 18 credits and the state licensure exam results in certification. The 18 credits may also be completed as part of the full master’s degree in educational leadership.  

Completion of courses results in graduate credits that can either be transferred into a full educational program or account for required licensure continuing education units.

The Women’s, Gender & Sexuality Studies Program draws on the expertise of faculty based in several departments, enabling students to develop a feminist perspective on traditional disciplines and to cross disciplinary boundaries in order to explore experiences nationally and globally. Students examine the ways that gender intersects with other systems of domination, think critically about ways to challenge violence and injustice, and work together to envision a more just and humane world.

In our practicum course, students gain experience working with organizations that serve or mobilize women. In our senior seminar, they pursue independent research in topics of their own choosing. An interdisciplinary course, Women: Images and Realities, provides the introduction to the program.

The undergraduate German degree programs serve students who are seeking high proficiency in German language and cultural studies. Programs courses focus on real-world communication skills, and our instructors promote a student-centered, immersion- based learning environment that encourages the open exchange of ideas, instills awareness of cultural differences, and encourages a deeper understanding of events, institutions, and traditions. Students are asked to reflect on the nature and value of literary, cinematic, and artistic works as part of a larger inquiry into the making of cultures. Coursework fosters self-awareness and respect for others through reading and discussion, and offers opportunities for interaction with a wide variety of people, products, and perspectives from German-speaking countries, and numerous other regions in which German is an official or commonly spoken language.

Educating teachers has been WOU’s priority since it was founded more than 160 years ago. Even now, when WOU has dozens of majors, education is the one we’re known for – and no wonder. As an education major, you will have a variety of grade levels and subject areas to focus on, from elementary to high school and language arts to mathematics. You can earn your teaching license, achieve endorsements and get clinical experience, all from WOU.

Students who graduate with an emphasis in Business Education are prepared and certified to teach classes in accounting, basic/general business, and information systems. Examples of courses include business law, economics, consumer education, management, computer applications, Web page design, and communications. Business education students receive endorsements in all possible business areas except computer programming.

The School of Education offers four degree programs: the Bachelor of Science in Education with a major in Bilingual/English as a Second Language Education, the Bachelor of Science in Education with a major in Elementary Education (with options in Elementary Education and Early Childhood Education), the Bachelor of Science in Education with a major in Middle Level Education, and the Bachelor of Science in Education with a major in Special Education. The primary purpose of the Elementary, Early Childhood, Middle Level Education, and Special Education programs is to prepare candidates to become educational practitioners who engage in informed action that is grounded in knowledge and reflection, who are deeply committed to the highest standards of professional practice, who are able to adapt to emerging social, economic, and cultural landscapes, who are skilled in the use of technological tools that promote teaching and learning, and who are committed to empowering all learners. The programs provide students with a foundation of general studies, a scope and sequence of carefully designed professional courses emphasizing exploratory, experiential, student-centered teaching and learning, and extensive experiences observing and working with children in a variety of classroom settings. Field experiences begin early in each program and gradually increase through the senior year, culminating in student teaching.

Through the program, you will receive both in-class and field experiences to prepare you for a variety of teaching opportunities after graduation. The Family and Consumer Science Education major is a four-year program with both a specified curriculum to guide you and one semester of supervised student teaching.

Secondary education is a major in which University students learn to teach middle and high school students in specific subject areas. Students are prepared for state licensure exams that they must pass to earn teaching positions. Secondary education programs include: biology, chemistry, citizenship with history or political science, communication, English, French, general science, German, Latin, mathematics, physics and Spanish.

Education Studies is a cross-disciplinary field that considers learning, teaching, and schooling as lenses through which to understand social processes and contexts. This major conceptualizes education broadly, recognizing that the study of education can serve a variety of purposes, apply to diverse demographic groups, and be situated within a range of institutional and social contexts.

As a course of study, Education Studies can offer students the chance to explore topics such as human development, education policy, the history of schooling, educational research methodology, learning theory, the sociology of education, and urban education, among others. The major can prepare students for a wide assortment of jobs in schools and afterschool programs, non-profit institutions, international development agencies, cultural institutions, and government. It can also serve as a solid foundation for advanced graduate work in education, sociology, anthropology, psychology, history, political science, or international studies.

The Utah Tech University Physical Sciences department offers a variety of courses in Chemistry, Engineering, Environmental Science, Geology, Geography, and Physics that allow students to better understand and appreciate the natural world and our place in it. Many of these courses fulfill the General Education Physical Science requirement for all students. Coursework and academic degrees offered in the Physical Sciences also fulfills prerequisites and requirements for students planning to pursue careers in natural sciences, chemistry, physics, engineering, environmental sciences, earth sciences, and medical and health sciences.

The focus in elementary education leads to a single licensure certification in elementary education. The coursework included in the Elementary Education Program presents core knowledge of the profession, combining pedagogical and theoretical content with an observational assessment. Students demonstrate a basic understanding of the teaching profession and child development, incorporating that knowledge and understanding in various clinical experiences. Evidence and implementation of developmentally appropriate practices are included in all areas of the students’ learning. The program emphasizes the uniqueness of each child, recognizing that children are best understood in the context of family, culture, society, and environment.

Southern Utah University's business education program is designed specifically for those students with a strong desire to teach business at the secondary education level. By graduating from this SUU degree program, you will complete all the requirements to be licensed to teach business in the state of Utah. In addition, every student in the Business Education degree program participates in Professional Business Leaders (PBL) and Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA), organizations that provide excellent experience and career connections for the future.

Through liberal arts core courses, you will gain content knowledge in math, science, children’s literature, and history. Education courses focus on curriculum theory and design, special education, instructional technology, and key concepts and thinkers in the field.

This concentration does not lead to Massachusetts licensure, so MTEL preparation is not a part of the curriculum. As such, your field experience will culminate in a semester-long internship in a setting of your choosing, instead of student teaching. You will also complete internships during your freshman and sophomore years that allow you to build a resume and explore your interests. Our close-knit, hands-on courses are led by faculty with years of classroom experience. You'll get real-world advice and plenty of support as you find yourself on the “other side of the desk” for the first time.

Outstanding field experiences are a hallmark of our program. Prior to your student teaching residency, you'll get plenty of practicum experience. After, you'll undertake a year-long student teaching residency in public schools as your capstone experience.

To give you greater breadth in teaching, special education student teaching takes place at two different levels (elementary, middle, and/or high school). The elementary education portion of student teaching is at the elementary or middle school level.

The M.Ed in Educational Leadership addresses the Georgia Educational Leadership Standards using personalized and authentic learning experiences in the school setting.  The primary candidate is a certified classroom teacher who wishes to begin a career in educational administration. The program may be successfully completed in one academic year of three semesters, each having two six-hour credit courses beginning in the fall of each year. All course work is available online to support the school-based learning experiences. School partner mentors and university professors support and facilitate the candidate’s work.  A residency requirement of 250 clock hours integrated in the coursework helps the candidate address experiences across all standards.  Successful completion of the program enables the candidate to be recommended for Tier I certification with the Georgia Professional Standards Commission.

The University of Mount Union’s Bachelor of Arts degree in physical education and license prepares students to work with children from grades K-12. Students in our CAEP and NASPE accredited undergraduate physical education major program benefit from a winning combination of textbook learning in top-notch facilities and extensive “real-world” teaching experiences that will position you for a successful and rewarding teaching career. From principles of health to fitness and leisure activities to motor and developmental learning, you will explore a variety of courses as a physical education major. You will also study human movement and exercise, along with anatomy and physiology, building skills to prepare you for a field in physical education. 

Students pursuing teacher licensure programs in the College of Education (COE) must meet requirements in a series of sequential gateways. Included in the gateway requirements are successful completion of specified coursework, achievement of appropriate grade point averages, requirements for clinical experiences, and appropriate tests for the licensure area. Meeting all Gateway requirements leads to degree and licensure completion.
