Working with published writers from within and outside the University, the Keele Writing MA offers participants an opportunity to improve their writing and to bring it up to publishable standard while learning more about the critical and intellectual context in which their work is situated.

Students on the Keele Writing MA also participate directly in the development and maintenance of the events, publications, workshops and short courses which constitute Keele's vibrant writing culture - typically through opting to gain experience in one of the areas in which writers often establish a secondary income – reviewing, editing and teaching.

You can study full-time or part-time for this MA. It is also possible to take short courses in Creative Writing, delivered as part of our MA programme, as well as Certificate and Diploma-level courses in the subject.

As well as the popular MLitt in Creative Writing, we also offer a research-led Creative Writing route, which may suit those who wish to pursue a particular sustained project. You can study the MRes Creative Writing full-time, over a year, or part-time over two years.

You'll create a piece of imaginative writing in collaboration with a successful, published author – either the novelist and screenwriter Andrew Meehan (One Star Awake, The Mystery of Love) or Dr. Rodge Glass, novelist, short story writer, editor and biographer of the great Glaswegian writer Alasdair Gray.

You can specialise in one of these genres:

• poetry
• fiction
• imaginative non-fiction
• hybrid writing

The length of your project can be negotiated with your supervisor, but will usually be around 30,000 words. This includes 5,000 words of personal reflection on your writing. Your project should show:

• understanding and consistency in your project and its accompanying critical analysis
• good understanding of the genre developed and appraised
• use of relevant and appropriate language to the genre developed and appraised
• clear understanding of narrative or other formal strategies adopted
• awareness of literary/historical/theoretical context appropriate to the project
• clarity, economy of expression, avoidance of vague generalisations
• evidence of independent thought and imagination

You'll also take research skills methods with other postgraduates in the department of English. This gives you the opportunity to socialise with students on other courses and to learn how to present your work in public. Previous MRes students at Strathclyde have gone on to notable success, such as Allan Wilson (author of Wasted in Love, Cargo Publishing, 2011), and Dr Craig Lamont, now a Research Associate in Robert Burns Studies at the University of Glasgow.

You will also develop your knowledge and understanding of a wide range of literary writing in English, from earliest times to the present day. This degree culminates in the opportunity to develop both extended creative and critical pieces under the guidance of award-winning writers.

Before proceeding to the main degree, you will spend your Foundation Year preparing yourself for a degree in the arts by improving your study and research skills and gaining arts-related knowledge and understanding. You will also have the opportunity to study a language, should you wish to.

You may be writing regularly; you may be returning to it after concentrating on your career. Whatever your background, if you're serious about your writing, this postgraduate course can help you to develop your practice.

Several graduates of the Masters have gone on to be award-winning influential poets, among them Emily Berry, Abigail Parry, Nick Makoha, Katrina Naomi, Richard Scott and Jack Underwood who now teaches at Goldsmiths. At the heart of the Manchester Writing School are our Masters programmes in Creative Writing, available to study on campus in Manchester, and also from anywhere in the world via online distance learning. 

On our Master of Fine Arts (MFA) programme, you will explore and practice techniques and styles of modern and contemporary writing and apply these through the development of your own full-length book or script. 

MFA students undertake all of the elements of our MA Creative Writing programme (a taught element blending writing workshops with reading units, an elective, and a dissertation), then take an additional unit about the publishing, literary and arts industries and submit a full-length manuscript: a completed novel or short story collection, poetry collection, book for children or young adults, script for stage, screen or radio, or book of creative non-fiction.

You will be introduced to professionals from the publishing industries, which may include literary agents, publishers, broadcasters and arts practitioners, and the School has strong links with many major arts, educational and cultural organisations. Our MFA model is exceptional in coaching students through the development and completion of a full-length book under the sustained guidance of distinguished, practising writers and seeing those students achieve success in publishing. 

You will specialise in one of the following routes: Novel (including Short Fiction), Poetry, Writing for Children & Young Adults, Scriptwriting (for stage, screen or radio) or Creative Non-Fiction. 

The MFA is available to complete over two years full-time or three years part-time. This course is available to study on campus (full-time or part-time) or online (part-time only).  We have intakes to the programme in September and January each year.

Foundation Entry degree courses are ideal if you’ve got the ability to study for a degree, but don’t have the necessary formal qualifications to directly join an honors program. It’s a great stepping stone to a full degree.

You’ll have a lot of choice on this course. On the Language side, there are modules to suit any interest – from language structure to the teaching of language, language and gender and forensic linguistics.

You could also choose to specialize in the related areas of media, forensic and political discourse, or the nuts and bolts of language by choosing syntax, phonology and morphology. You’ll develop your writing in a range of genres, including short stories, poetry, plays and radio and film scripts.

Lancaster's degree in Theatre and Creative Writing is taught jointly by the Lancaster Institute for the Contemporary Arts (LICA) and the Department of English and Creative Writing. It combines the study of Theatre with the writing of original and imaginative fiction, poetry or plays. These two different focuses reinforce and complement each other.
