Advanced clinical practice enables practitioners to practise to their full potential and to optimise their contribution to meeting population and individuals’, families’ and carers’ needs through different models of service delivery and multidisciplinary working. The PgCert, PgDip and MSc imaging programme aims to provide the opportunity to develop the advanced knowledge and skills required for specialised and advanced practice.

We do this through critical evaluation of the theory and practice related to a range of diagnostic imaging modalities relevant to the participant’s current and possible future roles in a fast-changing healthcare landscape. The programme is undergoing College of Radiographers approval. CASE accreditation for the ultrasound elements of the programme has been applied for.

Our MSc in Medical Ultrasound provides clinicians and medical scientists with intensive training in both the theoretical basis of medical ultrasound and the required scanning and diagnostic skills.

The programme runs successfully through a combination of educational materials and opportunities to interact online alongside more traditional teaching methods. This blended format of delivery consists of teaching sessions (face-to-face or made available online), live webinars, discussion fora, formative and summative assessments administered through our virtual learning environment, and a range of resources to facilitate self-study and progression. This allows for much of the programme to be studied remotely if required.

The programme is both academic and vocational in nature, and is the only MSc of this type to offer a clinical attachment as part of it.

As an academic degree, it does not provide candidates with an automatic qualification to practise as a sonographer, and national examinations may be required to achieve this.

Nevertheless, the programme follows the core British Society of Echocardiography syllabus and prepares any future candidate for successful completion of the national examinations.

Each specialism is run independently in its respective hospital department. You will have exposure to the real life workings of a department and to patients, gaining hands-on experience through a placement with Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust.

Please note that echocardiography students will receive 'MSc Medical Ultrasound (Echocardiography)' as their award upon successful completion of the course, whereas vascular ultrasound students graduate with 'MSc Medical Ultrasound'.

We have designed our Medical Ultrasound course for radiographers, doctors, midwives, scientists and others who want to practice clinical ultrasound in their professional roles. Our lectures are organised in block release, in conjunction with compulsory clinical placements so that you can take the course while still working. In accordance with accepted good practice, the course integrates theory with practice, meaning that you will perform diagnostic ultrasound examinations as you learn.

Diagnostic Radiographers produce and interpret images of the human body. Diagnostic Imaging is central to health care and is critical in the diagnosis and treatment of trauma and disease.

GCU's Diagnostic Imaging qualification is recognised worldwide and allows you to register with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and the Society and College of Radiographers.

Most of Scotland's Diagnostic Radiographers graduate from GCU, equipped with the knowledge, competencies and attributes needed to practice in the modern health and social care services. You will have access to a dedicated x-ray suite that simulates practice.

An elective placement at the end of Year 3 provides the opportunity to study abroad.

We run a well-established Strathclyde Centre for Doctoral Training (SCDT) in Communication Disorders. This multidisciplinary CDT focuses on a wide range of aspects related to the diagnosis and treatment of people with communication problems. The supervisory pool spans all four University faculties, which provides you with access to the highest level of academic expertise as well as a significant pool of technical resources, including labs for speech & movement analyses, signal processing; systems for eye tracking, or EEG.

On this four-year course, you’ll explore topics from the structure of language and how speech sounds are expressed, to anatomy, the psychology behind our development, and the effects of politics on the provision of speech and language therapy in the community.

You won’t simply learn the theories and research behind how we communicate and why people have difficulties in communicating, you’ll also learn the practical skills you’ll need.

You’ll study the techniques, skills and methods used to assess, analyse and manage clients, such as using boards with symbols that children can point to or swallowing tests for adults who have suffered a stroke to determine the treatment they need.

You’ll complete clinical placements in each year of study. Past placements have included working in a hospital with adults who have had strokes, special educational needs (SEN) provision for teenagers in a secondary school, and in community clinics.

This course leads to the award of BSc (Hons) Speech and Language Therapy and prepares you to register as a speech and language therapist. The course offers you the opportunity to develop your knowledge, skills and experience in the assessment and management of communication difficulties experienced by individuals across the lifespan.

The Foundation Year route is only available to home/EU students and not currently open to applications from international students.

This practical speech and language therapy course is approved by the Health and Care Professions Council. It is accredited by the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists.

On completion of the programme, you'll have an in-depth understanding of the causes, symptomatology and consequences of the range of human communication disorders. You'll also develop the clinical skills necessary for effective intervention practice.

You'll gain a thorough awareness of relevant legislation, statutory codes and policy affecting speech and language therapy practice.

You need to be able to identify with NHS values as stated in the NHS constitution.

The BSc Hons Diagnostic Radiography & Imaging programme is designed to provide vocational education at undergraduate level for careers in diagnostic radiography.

The BSc Hons Diagnostic Radiography & Imaging course is a full-time programme of study of three-years duration. On completion, successful graduates are eligible to apply for registration under the protected title of "Radiographer" or "Diagnostic Radiographer" with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC), the statutory regulatory body responsible for ensuring continuing standards of education, training and professional proficiency in order to protect the public. The course is also recognised and endorsed by the Society and College of Radiographers, both students and graduates of the programme are eligible to apply for membership of the Society of Radiographers.

From day one your learning will link theoretical knowledge with professional practice, so by the time you graduate you’ll be equipped with the skills you need to pursue a successful career in speech and language therapy, where your work will transform lives.

Working in our purpose-built rehabilitation and assessment facilities on campus, you’ll benefit from small class sizes. Your tutors will be on hand to offer you all the support you need throughout the course.

As you progress you’ll undertake several work placements, giving you vital experience and employable skills. By Year 2 you’ll have identified the career path you’d like to follow and undertake a full-time work placement in a relevant area of the health and social care sector.

We have strong links with speech and language therapists working throughout the NHS, in private practice across the North West, charitable organizations, and international institutions. So you’ll get opportunities to gain experience of the full breadth of modern practice.

Speech and language therapists work collaboratively with children and adults of all ages who are experiencing challenges with speech, language and communication and/or eating, drinking and swallowing. We work closely with parents, carers and families, as well as many other professionals, to identify, assess and offer support to people in many, different ways. Speech and language therapy really is a rich and varied profession.

At DMU, you’ll study a wide range of topics across the three-year programme – including phonetics and phonology, psychology, medical sciences, linguistics and language development. As the course progresses, you’ll learn more about communication disabilities, evidence-based practice and intervention and have opportunities to develop your own focus in your final year dissertation project.

Alongside your academic studies, each year you’ll undertake practice-based learning, including weekly and block placements in a range of settings, such as schools, hospitals, care homes and in the community. This enables you to apply your learning to practice and develop your clinical and professional skills in real-life situations.

This course leads to a professional qualification to practise as a speech and language therapist. You’ll be able to work in a diverse range of settings, for example schools and hospitals, nurseries, clinics or the client’s home. You might also pursue a role in higher education and research.

Speech and language therapists provide treatment and care for children and adults who have difficulties with communicating, eating, drinking or swallowing. Therapists take a collaborative approach, working alongside the individual’s carer, teacher or family, as well as other professionals.

Dementia Studies: Contemporary Approaches to Practice is an interdisciplinary course that offers cutting-edge knowledge about dementia and developments in care and service provision.

The course is designed for all those involved in the delivery of health and social care for people living with dementia. Undertaking the course will help you gain the specialist knowledge you will need to become an effective leader in dementia care.

Dementia is a global priority and identified by the World Health Organisation as the 21st century's biggest health and social challenge.  It is estimated that 55 million people have dementia worldwide, and the growing number of people living with dementia has an extensive societal and economic impact.

More importantly, dementia has a significant personal impact on individuals and their families. It is therefore essential that we build a workforce with the necessary skills and knowledge to plan, lead and deliver services for contemporary and future populations.
