The rate and complexity of environmental change poses profound economic, social and political challenges for contemporary society. Developing ways to address these challenges demands intellectual rigour, innovation and flexibility, as well as the capacity to think across existing disciplinary boundaries.

Our Environment, Politics and Development MSc provides an advanced theoretical understanding of the relationship between development problems and environmental issues. You will explore these relationships from the perspectives of political ecology, development geography and environmental governance. To illustrate these relationships, we use relevant case studies drawn from across the globe.

What are the causes of earthquakes, volcanoes, tsunamis, hurricanes, floods and landslides? How do we plan for them, lessen their impact and handle the emergencies that can result?

This course examines the physical science of natural hazards, the social factors that can contribute to disasters, emergency planning and disaster risk reduction (DRR). You'll gain expertise in a range of practical and field techniques through ‘real-world' exercises.

Guest speakers come from a variety of DRR organisations, provide first-hand learning opportunities and introduce you to potential career paths

This course will give you a broad understanding of the agri-food system as a whole. You’ll learn about the major issues in sustainable agriculture and the cutting-edge techniques used in crop and soil science.

Guest environmental and sustainability speakers give seminars regularly, and you'll get the opportunity to gain work experience through placements with our industrial, government and NGO partners.

You’ll cover topics such as global food security, the origins of agriculture, and agricultural ecology in a changing world.

This programme is suitable for those wishing to carry out a short, in depth research project, and not attend taught programmes. The MSc by Research programmes consist of induction courses, an eight-month research project and a period to write it up. The degree is carefully tailored to your interests, and can be particularly suitable for people undertaking research in a work-based context wishing to gain an academic qualification.
