The dissolution of the former Soviet Union has changed the social, political and economic environment of Central and Eastern Europe.

Our interdisciplinary program explores the massive social and cultural changes in Central and East European countries that have dominated the world's attention. Students will study literature, cinema, languages and cultures of the region, state formation and democratization, privatization, new market economies and more.

The Institute for Resources, Environment and Sustainability (IRES) at the University of British Columbia (UBC) is a problem-focused and curiosity-driven interdisciplinary research institute and graduate program, with interest and expertise in a wide range of topics under the realm of environment and sustainability. Our mission is to foster sustainable futures through integrated research and learning about the linkages among human and natural systems, and to support decision making from local to global scales. More often than not, we achieve this through collaborations across students and faculty in a manner that recognizes our collective skills, intellectual histories and methodological approaches, and yet encourages our interdependencies as we consider real world problems.

The Resources, Environment and Sustainability (RES) graduate program provides a home for interdisciplinary students focusing on the integration of the biophysical (ecological), socio-economic, and political realities of resource management within the context of a sustainable, healthy environment.

The Interdisciplinary Studies (IDIS) program covers the scope of multiple disciplines, enabling faculty from other graduate programs to participate in this program. You’ll gain an understanding of the theoretical, practical, and ethical processes involved in textile and clothing design, production, distribution, and consumption. With a strong background in marketing, buying, selling, strategic planning, and management processes, you’ll be prepared to enter any facet of the fashion industry.

The unique MSA degree is awarded through an academically rigorous yet professionally oriented graduate program. In project-based courses, a practicum placement, and a major research paper or thesis, students learn to think geographically and master Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to support operational and strategic decision-making in government and industry.

Spatial analysts work in business, environmental consulting, crime analysis, social policy, telecommunications, epidemiology and resource management. For example, they delineate market areas, estimate sales potentials, recommend facility locations or conduct environmental assessments. With the effective use of maps, location analysis and site suitability assessments, our graduates are shaping the economic and social well-being of cities, the settlement and conservation policies of regions, and the health and connectivity of people across the globe.
