Physics is the science which explores and identifies basic principles governing the structure and behaviour of matter, the generation and transfer of energy, and the interaction of matter and energy. Knowledge of physics is essential in other natural sciences, such as chemistry and geology, and to professions such as engineering, medicine, and dentistry. 
Medical physics is the application of physics to medicine. It generally concerns physics as applied to medical imaging and radiotherapy, although a medical physicist may work in many environments.

Astronomy is often considered a sub-field of physics in which principles of physics and mathematics are used to investigate the fundamental nature of the universe and its evolution; the properties of galaxies; and the birth, evolution, and death of stars and black holes.

Astronomers apply this knowledge to solve problems in navigation, space flight, and satellite communications, as well as to develop the instrumentation and techniques used to observe and collect astronomical data.

Astronomy is available at the undergraduate level as a major, or as a combined honours in Physics and Astronomy, which is strongly suggested for students wishing to pursue graduate studies in astronomy and a career in research.

Our Astrophysics program explores a wide range of questions about the physics and properties of stars, galaxies and the universe. You will study the properties of and physics behind astrophysical objects, and, through computational lessons, develop the tools and techniques to solve physics and geophysical problems. The learning process is enhanced through access to department resources including the Astronomical Observatory, which is available for solar and evening observing.

The Honors Astrophysics program incorporates several courses in advanced mathematics and honors level calculus. Students interested in this program should have a strong mathematical background.
