Masters in Mathematics in Canada

Pursue mathematics research in the broad areas of applied, discrete or pure math. Your education will be supplemented by coursework and regular seminars. The sum of your research will be a thesis that will advance the field of mathematics. You’ll defend this final work in an oral examination that will prove your mastery of mathematics.

The department offers a program of studies in several branches of mathematics leading to the Master’s of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees. Some of the chief branches offered are:

Analysis: Approximation Theory, Complex Analysis, Functional Analysis, Harmonic Analysis, Operator Theory, Ordinary and Partial Differential Equations
Applied Mathematics: Mathematical Biology, Mathematical Modelling, Numerical Analysis
Discrete Mathematics / Algebra: Associative Rings, Combinatorics, Computer Algebra, Group Theory, Invariant Theory, Matrix Theory, Spectral Graph Theory
Foundations: Model Theory
Geometry / Topology: Algebraic Geometry, Differential Geometry, Low Dimensional Topology, Symplectic Geometry

Mathematicians use theoretical and computational methods to solve a wide range of problems from the most abstract to the very applied. UBC's mathematics graduate students work in many branches of pure and applied mathematics. The MSc program consists of 24 or 27 credits of taught classes and a thesis (6 credits) or essay (3 credits) supervised by a faculty member. Students enrolled in the Institute of Applied Mathematics program have the additional option of writing a substantial 12 credit thesis.

Mathematical, Computer, Physical and Molecular Sciences (MCPMS) is one stream of the Master of Science degree in the Faculty of Science and Engineering. Thesis and project options are available. The thesis option has, as a substantial component, the completion of an original research program, culminating in the preparation of a thesis, and prepares graduates for careers in research or for further academic study. The project option provides training across disciplines particularly suitable to individuals with more defined career objectives, as well as provides a mechanism for non-traditional students (e.g., working students, teachers, and professionals) to upgrade their skills. Students within the MCPMS stream will, upon successful completion of the degree requirements outlined herein, obtain an MSc with one or any combination of the following study areas noted on their transcript: Mathematics, Biochemistry, Computer Science, Chemistry, and Physics.
 

The Department of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences offers graduate programs leading to the degree of Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Mathematical Finance, Mathematical Physics, Statistics, Biostatistics, Data Science, Statistical Machine Learning, and Modelling, Data, and Predictions.

Currently there is no course-based MSc program in Statistical Machine Learning, no thesis-based MSc or PhD programs in Modelling, Data, and Predictions, and no PhD program in Biostatistics.

Prospective graduate students should consult the Department about facilities available and the background required for the field in which they are interested.

Concordia’s association with ​ALGANT, the ISM, the CRM, ​and MITACS opens the door to ​advanced courses at ​other Quebec universities​, and to internships and collaborative projects in Canada and abroad. You will broaden your research network through seminars and presentations by leading ​researchers, and interaction with a diverse group of graduate students and postdoctoral fellows.  By the end of the program, you will be ready to apply mathematical expertise to your chosen field of interest.

This program welcomes motivated students seeking to acquire mathematical skills to advance their academic or industry career goals. MSc students produce high-quality work in the form of a thesis or major research paper, and learn how to write technical and scientific reports and communicate complex results to a general audience.
 

The MSc program is 24 months for full-time students and 48 months for part-time students. The format for the degree consists of at least 3 graduate level courses and a thesis. All students will take Algebra (Math 5405), Analysis (Math 5505), and a third course. In some cases, a student may be required to include undergraduate courses as well, if additional background preparation is required.
