Masters in Teaching in Canada

This project-based degree will teach you the science behind coaching. You’ll learn about techniques and current issues that will make you a more effective coach. This program begins with intensive summer-based coursework. From there it continues with online coursework and project work. You’ll also get hands-on experience through two cooperative work terms.

The Master of Education in Curriculum, Teaching and Learning is a challenging and enlightening program rich in scope and content. Students will study, interpret and share ideas with a community of graduate students who have a passion for thinking about and expressing educational ideas.

The MEd degree is designed as a practitioner's degree, for students who wish to acquire the knowledge, skills and experience necessary to work in a professional field. As a professional degree, the MEd is intended for students who wish, upon graduation, to assume positions of leadership in a practical setting or positions requiring more advanced study than that available at the bachelor's level.

TESL graduate students gain experience and understanding in such areas as: current issues in TESL theory and practice, second language acquisition, second language reading and writing, language socialization, language and identity, second language assessment, discourse analysis, critical applied linguistics, and research methods.

The Department of Educational Policy Studies offers master's and doctoral programs in the following specialized areas of study: Adult, Community and Higher Education; Studies in Educational Leadership; Indigenous Peoples Education; and Social Justice and International Studies in Education as well as a graduate certificate in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education.

The Department of Educational Policy Studies strives to develop critical and creative scholars who have a substantive understanding of the important systemic and contextual factors that bear upon Canadian and international education.

Graduate study in the above specializations is supported by a diverse group of full-time faculty, whose active research and publications (listed on the website at www.ualberta.ca/educational-policy-studies) are in the following general areas: aboriginal and indigenous perspectives in education; administration, leadership, and governance; careers and work; cultural, sociological, philosophical, historical, and political analysis of education; educational discourses and systems of thought; educational policy; educational reform; equity, diversity, and inclusivity in education; adult teaching and learning, professional development, and program evaluation; international and global education; and postsecondary education.

Integrating diversity into early childhood studies, this program is unique in North America. Terms such as “diversity” and “inclusion” encompass linguistic, cultural and racial identity issues, and disability, gender, class, sexuality, age and migration status. This approach recognizes a child’s need to develop a positive identity as an individual and group member. Students gain a deep understanding of the complex issues affecting children and their families.
