Bioinformatics combines biology, biochemistry, mathematics, statistics and computer science for analyzing and understanding the biochemical processes of life. If your passion is understanding biological processes, genetics, or diseases using biological information, this program would suit you well.

The MSc program is a full-time, research-intensive program. You’ll complete coursework and work on a research thesis of your design. This will be original, innovative research that will evolve our understanding of biology. You’ll defend your thesis in an oral examination.

If you’re in the MSc program, you may be able to transfer into the PhD program with supervisory approval.

The goal of this course is train students to effectively communicate science, particularly in the form of a seminar. The students will attend departmental seminars covering areas of interest to the faculty and students in the graduate Microbiology program. The students will then discuss the seminars in a separate class. The students will also deliver oral presentations on papers outside their field and will write assignments.

The Microbiology and Immunology programme involves immune cells, bacteria, fungi, viruses and parasites. Students can investigate the ecology, evolution and environments of micro-organisms, the diseases they cause, the microbiome and its influence on the immune system and our health, immunity and disease. We are seeking solutions to the problem of antibiotic resistance; designing new, combination drug therapies; using microbial engineering in industrial processing and environmental remediation; determining how our immune system can best protect us against infection and cancer; using this information to design new immunotherapies and treatments for inflammation and auto-immune diseases. Our projects span population and systems biology and ecology, organism behavior and function, cell interactions and molecular mechanisms, and our students graduate with extensive training in analytical thinking, creative innovation and effective communication. Degrees in our programme accelerate students in a great variety of careers in industry, academia, non-for-profit organisations and the business world.

A biomedical studies degree prepares you for career opportunities in various fields. It provides the background knowledge to attend professional programs in medicine, nursing, pharmacy, occupational therapy, dentistry, speech pathology or physiotherapy.

Areas of focus include energy and matter, ecosystems and population change, photosynthesis and cellular respiration, nervous and endocrine systems, reproduction and development, cell division, genetics and molecular biology.

When you study Cell and Molecular Biology, you get a front-row seat to study the basic processes that run life’s playbook. As a cell and molecular biologist, you can discover how genes shape organisms, how immune cells protect our body and how biotechnology can develop pest- or drought-resistant crops for the developing world.

Gain theoretical and practical expertise in the cellular and molecular sciences, with opportunities to conduct research into medically relevant concerns such as how cells turn cancerous and how gene expression affects aging. You can also participate in an optional paid co-op, a research thesis project or pursue an optional specialization in Management Sciences. Toronto Metropolitan University’s close proximity to the biomedical industry will prepare you to make a meaningful contribution to health care, helping to advance our knowledge of how cells function.
