In our MA, you will study French literature, language and culture. You can also do a concentration in Cultural, Social & Political Thought (CSPT). Faculty specialities include French, Quebec, French-Canadian, African and Caribbean literatures, culture and theory, cinema, theatre, Indigenous literatures, creative writing, research-creation, queer theories, digital humanities and theoretical and applied linguistics. You will take courses in research methods and professional practices. This program is dynamic and designed to foster a close-knit cohort. Choose a project-based option or a thesis option.

The Department of Linguistics is pleased to offer both Master of Arts (MA) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees in Theoretical Linguistics. Our students pursue original research in a variety of linguistic subdisciplines, including core theoretical areas (e.g. phonology, morphology, syntax) and combined areas (e.g. historical linguistics, sociolinguistics, cognitive linguistics).  The department continues to encourage collection of primary data through fieldwork with native speakers of understudied and endangered languages, and increasingly our students are finding fruitful projects based on experimental and corpus data. Language is the primary medium of human culture and expression. Our programs in Spanish open doors to new ways of understanding the world through the study of language, culture and literature. You will delve into the language of Cervantes, Lorca, Garcia Marquez and Almodóvar and explore one of the world’s most widely spoken languages.

The study of literature — including stories, poems, graphic novels, films and digital content — animates our experience of diverse identities, cultures and time periods. In this program, you’ll have access to independent research opportunities, community projects, campus journals and practicums in creative writing, digital creation in a literary context, or writing in the arts. You’ll graduate with superior writing skills, ready to enrich the cultural landscape and advance the art of communication in various forms and industries.
