Historians study how societies change over time and use past events to help understand modern concerns surrounding a wide array of topics including environmental crisis, colonialism, addiction, mental health, and changing gender roles.

History gives us the tools to reflect on who we are, where we come from and where we might go. Learn how to critically evaluate historical myths versus truths. Gain a deeper understanding of history and its role in human society. Study abroad in our optional field schools such as Canada's Internment Era Field School.

Historical study explores the past to explain the present and illuminates the present through the past.

Our History program provides students with opportunities to discover, understand and assess past times and changes over time. Students will develop strong writing and critical analysis skills.

Examine a wide range of art historical periods and topics, as well as critical theories, while taking into account the constantly extending reach of visual studies in a globalized world. Many fields connect and inform art historical study – you can find a wide variety of courses in other Faculty of Arts departments to complement your studies.

Explore the cause and effect of critical events throughout history such as warfare, activism, exploration, culture and science.

Historians study what people have thought, said, and done in the past. You will learn to think critically about the historical processes that shape the present.

As a history major, you will develop the knowledge needed to pursue careers in law, education, journalism, civil service, politics, museum and library archives, or post-secondary professorship.

History shapes the world we inhabit; it substantially determines the constraints and the possibilities of our experience; it colours the aspirations and aversions that drive us, individually and collectively. We can choose to live in ignorance of history, but we cannot live independently of it. History, in other words, is a burden we all share, but for some of us it is also a resource. It imposes limits but also supplies opportunities.

Understanding the past allows us to explore the diversity and complexity of the human experience. In this program, you’ll study historical debates and engage with documents, artifacts, stories and digital media from ancient societies up to the 21st century. Experiential learning opportunities include museum and curatorial courses and practicums, work placements and international exchange programs. Participation and membership in the Ryerson History Society will also encourage community building and development of leadership skills that allow you to shape the future.
