The Bachelor of Arts in Business Communication (BA) is an interdisciplinary program that will develop your knowledge of media, cultural studies and business alongside theoretical and practical skills. The communication methods learnt and media training students get throughout this course are relevant to careers in professional writing, journalism, public relations, communications, and advertising.

Journalists have traditionally sought to provide news and information in an accurate, timely and accessible manner to enable the public to make informed decisions. Yet journalism is in flux, with the digital age blurring boundaries of news production and consumption between professionals, citizens and activists. The aim at the UBC Master of Journalism program is to develop graduates who understand the evolving media environment and who are able to use journalistic practices to contribute to meaningful public discourse across all forms of media.

The multidisciplinary Master of Arts in Communications and Technology (MACT) offers a theoretical, historical, and practical examination of communications. The degree is designed for individuals who seek to provide reflective and informed leadership in the management and use of information and communications technologies in their organizations and fields. These fields include education and training, information technology, marketing, mass media, new media production, program design and development, public affairs, and writing and publishing. Coursework covers small-group and organizational communication; the theory, history, and practice of information and communications technologies; and the research skills associated with analyzing and evaluating these technologies, particularly as they are managed and used in the workplace. The MACT program may be completed through either a course-based or thesis-based route.

We are one of the most established and respected Communication Studies programs in North America, and are well known for combining creative media production with the study of media theory, criticism and history. We draw from the humanities, social sciences and fine arts in a unique program that has trained many influential media makers.

You will work with a variety of media art forms and you will examine how meaning and ideas are communicated through media in various ways. In the first year you will create projects with sound, video and intermedia, as well as study theory, criticism and history of communications and media. You will be part of an exciting and dynamic team of students. You'll work together for three years, taught by an engaged and dedicated faculty of renowned scholars and artists.

This unique partnership between two universities combines expertise and opportunities for advanced study of media and cultural technologies, as well as communication politics in practice and theory. The two-year, full- or part-time MA program combines academic and professional work through independent research in theory-building, media practice or policy implications. The full-time PhD program provides a thorough grounding in theory and method, and the practices, processes and technologies of contemporary, media-immersed cultures.
