Bachelors in Medical Service in Australia

This is a prestigious program of coursework and research in either nursing or midwifery for high achieving students who have completed the Bachelor of Nursing and/or the Bachelor of Midwifery, or a comparable degree course.

You will undertake research methodology training and carry out an independent research project in nursing or midwifery, working closely with a supervisor who will provide you with individual guidance and academic counselling. If you have both a degree in nursing and a degree in midwifery you may, with agreement of their supervisor, undertake a combined honours over the one year of full-time study in both fields.

This course offers a pathway to higher-level research in nursing for graduates with a nursing degree, or in midwifery for graduates with a midwifery degree.

The Bachelor of Veterinary Nursing is the first para-professional veterinary nursing qualification of this level available in Australia.

It is designed to produce highly skilled clinicians with exceptional levels of practical skill, knowledge and in-depth understanding gained through a stimulating exploration of the academic underpinnings of the field.

A semester-long industry placement in second year provides the opportunity to apply the theory and practices learned on campus in a range of areas of interest. This placement, along with ongoing comprehensive practical clinical experience will ensure that graduates are 'Future ready' and highly employable.

In third year, students can opt to undertake paid work in veterinary practices (outside of classes). Throughout their course, students undertake WIL placements in various industry settings including hospitals, animal shelters and farms. Students are fully supervised by experienced veterinary team members while at external placements.

The qualification awarded on graduation is recognised in the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) as Level 7.

The Bachelor of Nursing (Honours) is a one-year degree for high-achieving students who have already completed the Bachelor of Nursing or equivalent. The honours degree allows students to build upon the knowledge gained in their past degree, develop research skills that will equip them for future study at a higher degree level and work closely with an academic expert to contribute to a particular area of interest. The main focus of the degree is to produce a research thesis under supervision from experienced academic staff.

Importantly, this degree does not lead to nurse registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).

You have the option to study part-time, taking up to six years to complete your degree, or full-time, with the possibility of fast tracking your degree by taking units it all three trimesters, allowing you to complete the Bachelor of Nursing in two years.* If you're already an unrestricted Enrolled Nurse, enter in year two of the degree and graduate in four trimesters.*
• Clinical placements with major health service providers in the public, non-profit and private sectors, community and mental health, or in specialist multidisciplinary primary health care services. West Tamworth's Coledale Health and Education Clinic, for example, offers a unique clinical placement which emphasises community engagement, client-centred care and interprofessional practice in a rural setting.

Before commencing study, you must meet a range of course pre-requirements. These include compliance with NSW Health mandatory immunisation requirements, Criminal Record Clearance, English Language Requirements and a Working with Children Check.

If you are a domestic student, you may choose to study on campus at Armidale, or online (commencing in Trimester 1 only) with mandatory on-campus intensive schools.

If you are an international student admitted under Course Rule (c), you may be offered a place at Armidale or UNE Sydney (Parramatta), with intakes in Trimester 2 or Trimester 3. Quotas apply for the places available at each campus, and the campus you may be offered may not be your first choice. If you are an international student admitted under Course Rule (d), you will be able to study on campus at Armidale online, commencing in Trimester 3. *If you choose to study in all three trimesters, you will be able to complete all units of the course in two years. Trimester 3 runs from late October – February the following year. this means that you will have completed all of the course requirements, but will not be able to apply for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA), or go on to further study such as an Honours year until the results from your final Trimester are available (usually late February – early March).

If you do not meet the admission requirements for our Bachelor of Nursing, you may be able to take advantage of UNE's alternative admission pathways, for example by completing foundation studies through a Pathways Enabling Course which includes two first year nursing units.
